The health and daily living destination at 40 Wall Street — with expanded convenience, fresh food and beauty departments, enhanced beauty services and a pharmacy with an on-premise doctor — offered a one-stop-shop. The offerings and services at 40 Wall Street are unparalleled within the drugstore industry.The 40 Wall Street store showcases Duane Reade’s rebranding and repositioning efforts with features including a nail bar with colors from OPI and Essie; a hair salon by Phyto Universe; juice and chef-manned sushi stations; a 20-foot official NYSE in-store ticker; and a unique, philanthropic shoeshine station.Duane Reade combined innovative fixture design, layout, technology and content development never seen before in the US drugstore space to meet and exceed the needs of the Financial District community.“Every Day is Different,” Always & Tampax (Procter & Gamble/Saatchi & Saatchi X)Every product claims to protect women against menstrual period leaks. When she still experiences leaks, she tends to blame herself rather than the product. The opportunity was to encourage the shopper to use multiple absorbencies within a product line to meet her needs throughout each stage of her period.To a woman having her menstrual period, avoiding leaks is an ongoing challenge. Research shows that a woman’s menstrual flow changes multiple times during her period, yet few feminine care products address this need.“Every Day is Different” educated her that the key to a leak-free period was getting the right mix of absorbency at the right time during her cycle. It spoke to her in a fun way, using the weather forecast — in this case, a “flowcast” — as a metaphor.“Every Day is Different” drove feminine care regimen across product types through focused messages online and in-store, leveraged a simple insight about women’s menstrual cycles, and brought to life a category-changing execution, driving sales and share.“Just For U,” SafewaySafeway saw an opportunity to personalize the shopping experience based on what is important to its shoppers. Its mobile application leverages Safeway’s proprietary “Just For U” technology to sort offers based on each customer’s unique purchase history.Savings are loaded directly onto their loyalty card and are automatically applied when the customer checks out in-store.The mobile app also allows customers to view Safeway’s weekly circular, and create a shopping list that includes not only products with coupons and deals but also any other product they need to purchase.Customers use their list, which is sorted by category, to navigate the store quickly and check off items as they place them in their cart, ensuring they don’t forget an item. Customers can manage their list by adding or deleting items, making it quick and easy to use the list during each visit.To help launch the mobile app, Safeway’s in-store employees intercepted consumers to educate them about its benefits. Using iPads, employees registered interested consumers on the spot, creating excitement at store-level, both with customers and employees.Within six months, more than one million downloads of the app have taken place. Safeway’s app is the seventh most popular downloaded app in the iTunes Lifestyle category, and 148th most popular overall.“Feeding America at 7-Eleven,” PepsiCo/7-Eleven (TracyLocke)To encourage charitable giving among Millennial males, “Feeding America at 7-Eleven” donated five cents to a local Feeding America food bank each time they checked into their local 7-Eleven via Facebook. They could then drive an additional five-cent donation when they purchased a 20-ounce Pepsi product.The viral nature of Facebook allowed consumers’ friends to see the donation to Feeding America with a link to an online video that explained the program.Through local food bank websites and blogs, Pepsi encouraged local Feeding America food banks across the United States to advertise the program and reach out to their members and supporters to visit 7-Eleven stores and participate in the program.Publicity was leveraged to provide local context around the program, and how the donations would benefit 7-Eleven’s local communities. Franchisees were recruited to help share the story of Feeding America and speak to how the donations would be used within the community.Pepsi secured three months of off-shelf display based on the program, and increased dollar sales and dollar share of 20-ounce Pepsi products. A total of 195,000 people checked in during the three-month program — more check-ins than any recent Pepsi program — and 253,000 people “liked” the Pepsi Facebook page after learning about the program. More than $250,00 worth of donations were generated for Feeding America food banks.This program demonstrated that it is possible for a retailer to partner with a manufacturer around a local charity, provide a compelling point of difference for that retailer, and drive sales and brand engagement for the manufacturer.Staples Mobile App, Staples (Sapient Nitro)Staples saw its mobile app as a chance to solve customer pain points — including the ability to re-order supplies easily, find the right ink or toner, and access their Staples Rewards — by providing a truly convenient shopping experience in-store or on-the-go.The app also gives Staples the opportunity to get that much closer to the customer, and understand what they want and need, so that the company can provide the right value to them.Staples built its mobile app through extensive customer research. It truly is the “app its customers built.” To make it easy for small businesses to reorder supplies, the app features a virtual supply closet, letting users scan products with their smartphone camera and batch them into lists. It lets them easily access their Rewards, sends them reminders when they have unclaimed rewards, and personalizes the shopping experience by serving up specialized coupons and offers to users.The new app also makes cross-channel shopping easier, allowing customers to get the best of the Staples.com and in-store shopping experiences. Customers can quickly access rich product information and ratings and reviews while in-store, or find the nearest Staples store with the specific product they need by using the app’s store locator and inventory check feature.In addition, the app provides more ways to save via its store check-in feature, which offers special coupons and promotions when a customer enters a Staples store with their smartphone.While Staples does not disclose sales numbers or traffic figures, the company has seen very high usage of the Staples Rewards, list building and store check-in features.The Staples app is not only innovative — with unique concepts in the multi-channel shopping space, like personalized coupons upon store check-in — but it also helps push Staples e-commerce concepts even further ahead as the ultimate testing ground for improvements to the shopping experience.“Snowball Effect,” Coca-Cola Co. (Arc Worldwide/Leo Burnett)Arctic Home is a multi-year effort by The Coca-Cola Company and World Wildlife Fund to protect the polar bear and its habitat. “Snowball Effect,” a free branded mobile game app, let young adults spread the word about Arctic Home by starting virtual snowball fights with Facebook friends.People downloaded the mobile app by scanning a QR code on cups at 7-Eleven, Facebook or the App Store. Since no one wants to back down from a snowball fight — especially one for a good cause — challenges and info about Arctic Home spread from friends to friends to friends. This was the first U.S. campaign where Coke used QR codes to deliver content in a retail environment.The impact of Snowball Effect went far beyond Facebook. Coke sales at 7-Eleven went up by more than 20%. Tens of thousands of media outlets, blogs, and Twitter users wrote about the app, and it helped raise $1.7 million to protect the polar bear.In just nine weeks, people started more than 50,000 snowball fights, helping spread the Arctic Home message to more than 12 million Facebook friends.For the first time, 100% of 7-Eleven franchises bought into, and implemented, a Coca-Cola campaign in their stores. It helped 7-Eleven become more relevant to young adults. More important, it helped spread the message to protect the polar bear and its habitat.Sustainable Seafood Program, Whole Foods MarketIn 1999, Whole Foods Market was the first national retailer to work with the Marine Stewardship Council, a global, independent, not-for-profit organization that works to end overfishing worldwide, to identify sustainable wild seafood so that shoppers could make the best environmental choices possible.In 2010, Whole Foods Market announced that it would start labeling the sustainability status information of wild-caught seafood using color-coded labels and end the sale of red-rated wild seafood by Earth Day, 2013.The opportunity was that the company was able to end the sale of red-rated wild seafood one year early — by Earth Day 2012 — by sourcing fish from different areas.Whole Foods created an integrated approach that included marketing, public relations, social media, video and multimedia content, events, contests — internal and external — and key media partnerships. In-store, Whole Foods helped customers navigate the often-confusing landscape of seafood sustainability.Materials educated customers on how to make the best seafood choices, explained seafood ratings and the role of nonprofit partners. The knowledge and skills of fishmongers in each store was highlighted as they competed regionally (and, eventually, 11 nationally) to become the company’s champion fishmonger. This was promoted through in-store posters and promotions as well as online and digital channels.Whole Foods also partnered with two food magazines to promote its initiative, and during Earth Month seafood content took over the wholefoodsmarket.com page with blog posts, videos, recipes, and more.Throughout, Whole Foods utilized #WFMFish for tweet chats and contests. Chalkboard art and signage around the March 30 announcement encouraged conversations with shoppers about healthy oceans and alternatives to the fish Whole Foods no longer sold.Whole Foods’ seafood initiative utilized cross-team, multi-stakeholder, multi-event collaborations that resulted in mission-driven work with strong sales. It empowered team members and shoppers alike.“Truth or Hair,” Procter & Gamble (Arc Worldwide/Leo Burnett)Eghty-five percent of all women are too embarrassed to talk about unwanted facial hair. If they couldn’t even talk about it, how could they be expected to buy Olay’s new Facial Hair Removal Duo?The solution was to create TruthorHair.com — a safe, non-judgmental website for women to have a real, candid dialogue about unwanted facial hair. It debunked facial hair myths and built credibility by streaming helpful videos featuring skincare professionals.To build even more awareness, bus shelters and train wraps were strategically used in key markets. Women were also reached in their favorite magazines, which included a playful, peel-and-reveal coupon. In-store, they were met with displays and shelf-talkers. This served to engage shoppers, educate them about unique product benefits, and drive sales.TruthorHair.com has had more than 578,065 unique visitors since the launch. Amazingly, less than 12 hours into the online presale, the Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo was the number-one seller on Amazon Beauty. The product quickly became the number-one selling Olay product in North America, and was the skincare category’s number-one product in the third quarter of 2011. It also became Olay’s number-one best-selling item on Olay.com, selected 50% more often than the next bestseller.Ad tracking showed 69% of target consumers who saw the ads claimed positive purchase intent, showing that the messaging was truly relevant. In just a few short months, Truth or Hair broke down negative social taboos, and broke a few Olay sales records in the process.Spring Allergy Campaign, CVS/Allegra (Mars Advertising)To help untreated allergy sufferers, CVS and Allegra took a multiple-media, cross-category approach to engage shoppers out-of-store, and while on their traditional CVS shopping trip. Out-of-store, Allegra offered a digital beauty game, demonstrating the linkage of allergies to beauty, and providing relevant solutions supported by Facebook, blogger, and Twitter efforts. Targeted direct mail shared the beauty solution, with additional mailings to seasonal shoppers and allergy sufferers.In-store, Allegra reminded CVS shoppers that a new, effective allergy solution was available, with displays in the beauty, pet, nutrition, and photo categories. Each display provided detailed information and solutions to suit that category’s shopper and offered Allegra at a great value.The campaign increased Allegra’s market share at CVS. The digital beauty game generated 151 million impressions, 341% higher than estimated. Site visits came in at 114,517 users with over 55% being unique, and registrations totaled 58,790 consumers, well surpassing industry averages. Blogger and Twitter efforts produced over 7MM impressions, increasing SEM results for Allegra.“Canhole,” MillerCoors/Keystone Light (Arc Worldwide/Leo Burnett)Keystone Light’s target is a simple guy with simple needs. He doesn’t have a lot of money, and has learned to be resourceful and inventive. So, every time he bought a pack of Keystone Light, he also got a completely self-contained “cornhole” game to play.All he had to do was punch out the perforated hole designed into the box and use his crushed empty cans of Keystone Light as “bags” to deliver hours of summer party and sport “Bro-ments” with his buddies. The game was aptly named “Canhole.”The packaging was also utilized to communicate an engaging, self-executing promotion featuring Jack Link’s Beef Jerky. Bags of Jack Link’s could also be used for playing Canhole.Canhole delivered over three times the total point-of-sale orders from 2010. Share of below-premium segment for Keystone Light went up 0.5 share points versus 2010, while Natural Light went down 0.7.Keystone Light grew total distribution across the convenience channel by +0.7%, vs. a -1.0% decline for Natural Light. Brand awareness went up 10 points vs. prior year and beat Natural Light by 18 points.“One Girl Can,” Dove/Walmart Canada (Integrated Marketing Services)The “One Girl Can” campaign started with Dove and Walmart consumers nominating a young Canadian girl whom they knew could do anything.Nomination requests were distributed via Facebook, Dove and Walmart websites, and via targeted emails to Dove and Walmart customers.From the nominations, 14 outstanding girls were chosen to participate in a Dove- and Walmart-sponsored self-esteem weekend, where the girls and their moms were treated to concerts, motivational seminars, and photo shoots.A publishing company turned the photo shoots, combined with interviews with the girls, into a “One Girl Can” book. The book also included self-esteem activities designed to encourage the book as a gift item to inspire and empower young girls.The books were sold exclusively at Walmart in custom displays that also included Dove health and beauty products. Special book signings were scheduled at each girl’s local Walmart, each with PR coverage within their communities.The campaign delivered full displays of Dove product and the “One Girl Can” book to over 300 Walmart locations across Canada. During the program, Dove saw a 66% lift on baseline sales, an increase of 5% over the previous year.“Paint the 88,” Diet Mountain Dew/Kroger (TracyLocke/Tribal DDBM)By leveraging Mountain Dew’s partnership with Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the brand was able to drive consumer and shopper engagement through both online and in-store components in an exclusive partnership with Kroger during the peak of racing season.The opportunity was to appeal to Millennial males, who want deep connections with the brands they love. So, Mountain Dew created the “Paint the 88” website, a digital auto-body shop that allowed Mountain Dew fans to customize Dale Jr.’s racecar. Facebook unlocks also provided fans with extra creative tools to customize their car designs.Dale Jr. then selected a winning design, and his team brought the design to life for him to race at Talladega. The winning consumer was able to see the car design in Dale Jr.’s garage prior to the race, and attend the event to watch Dale Jr. compete in the car.Paint the 88 helped Mountain Dew increase its dollar sales, inventory on display, and lobby inventory on display by double digits vs. 2010 at Kroger. The online results of the program were also successful. More than 10,000 car design submissions were made on the Paint the 88 site.Publix Summer Storms, ConAgra Foods (CatapultRPM)Sales of canned pasta spike at Publix during hurricane season, so the retailer approached ConAgra Foods to create a promotion that would make the most of that spike, as well as provide shoppers with hurricane-season solutions.ConAgra came back with a custom display pallet with the brands identified as “trip drivers” all in one place. A value-add solutions/savings booklet provided storm-prep tips, recipes, offers, and a mail-in rebate offer for a Publix gift card.The program drew attention to the start of storm season, but not in a threatening or overwhelming way. No other manufacturer runs this type of summer storms program and it is exclusive to Publix.More than 14,400 $20 gift cards were redeemed throughout the life of the program. ConAgra Foods received a total of 655 full pallet displays in stores. Overall, the program generated a positive shopper marketing ROI of 1.86.Swiffer Aisle Redesign, Procter & Gamble/Walmart (Saatchi & Saatchi X)Swiffer prospects were confused at the shelf. Mops and brooms were displayed in their fully assembled state, upright and ready-to-use. Swiffer was sold in an awkward box, disassembled.By redesigning the packaging to merchandise the product out of the box, shoppers could touch and see the fully assembled starter kits at-shelf. They noticed something new, wanted to pick it up, and for the first time understood the device — what it was, how it worked, and the value.Reorganizing the shelf based on how shoppers shopped also enabled them to understand the entire Swiffer offerings at a glance and quickly decide which Swiffer products were right for them.Swiffer “Project Jack” re-ignited Walmart’s commitment and support for Swiffer, as well as the broader quick-clean category. Swiffer is now regularly displayed in-store and additional Swiffer items have been taken into distribution.Walmart “Freebie Machine,” Procter & Gamble (Saatchi & Saatchi X)Procter & Gamble created the Walmart “Freebie” machine to provide a fresh and exciting way to receive trial products, giving shoppers an opportunity to sample products simply by checking in through Facebook.Walmart’s familiar blue brand equity was leveraged on the Freebie machine, connecting the machine to the retailer, while the iconic Facebook logo communicated its social-media aspect. Expressive photography on the machine further reinforced the social component and gave the design an emotional tone and feel.Placed at the front of Walmart stores to maximize the shopper engagement, the Freebie machine’s intriguing combination of technology and free samples resulted in an average interaction time of three minutes. The total number of check-ins generated exceeded both P&G’s and Walmart’s expectations. As a result, the Walmart Freebie machine was expanded to additional stores six months later.The Freebie machine engages shoppers in-store with social media, using their “currency of connectivity” to deliver a sample. It delivers to shoppers through a medium with which they are comfortable, while still engaging and connecting with them in a traditional bricks-and-mortar store.“Believe in Heroes,” Multiple Brands (Acosta Marketing Group)Believe in Heroes is a national cause marketing campaign that brings grocery retailers, brands, and shoppers together to raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and empower the new generation of veterans.Beginning on September 11 and running through Veterans Day, Believe in Heroes calls on Americans to show their support and appreciation in a simple, everyday way: grocery shopping. Trusted brands support the campaign by participating in a freestanding insert distributed the week before Veterans Day to 50 million households nationwide.Retailers support it by merchandising participating brands, while raising funds for WWP through a variety of in-store promotional initiatives. Retailers are provided with materials to lead shoppers along the path-to-purchase by engaging with them pre-shop through the FSI, coupons, social media and public relations, and while shopping, with shelf tags and in-store signage.In 2011, more than 50 brands and 65 grocery retailers raised $3.5 million for WWP, and drove $80.7 million in incremental sales (total unit food and drug), a 25% increase over the previous year. This year, the campaign is expected to raise more than $4 million for critical veterans programs provided by WWP.Cough-Cold Care Package, Multiple Brands (RockTenn)In the huge cough/cold category, untold millions are left on the table because shoppers don’t think about getting prepared until it’s too late; shopping for the solution is a hassle, requiring navigation across multiple aisles; and retailers often underestimate the season’s true length, which really begins with the back-to-school germ rampage.The core idea was to offer shoppers a “Cough-Cold Care Package” solution center, featuring the essentials of a home preparedness kit: antibacterial hand soap, tissues, and both daytime and nighttime cold medicines for multiple brands: Dial Complete Liquid Hand Soap, Theraflu, Triaminic and Scotties tissue.A media awareness support plan was executed throughout the path to purchase. Retailers were engaged with a customized merchandising proposition that extended the duration of their cough-cold season, improved their in-store shoppability, and increased shopper purchase conversion. Every partner brand achieved double-digit sales increases. This program validated the potential of manufacturers working in unison and demonstrated how to bring together diverse cultures to engage the shopper and simplify the shopping experience.“Fuel a School,” Gatorade/Safeway (TracyLocke)The opportunity was to extend Safeway’s existing relationship with eScrip, which enables shoppers to earn donations for the athletic department at the school of their choice.“Fuel a School” featured a five-percent donation when Safeway eScrip shoppers purchased two Gatorade 8-packs and scanned their club card. An additional two percent bonus donation was added to drive trial of new Gatorade products, Prime and Recover.In key markets, local eScrip ambassadors presented to PTAs and Boosters to drive additional program visibility. Targeted pre-shop digital communications connected with eScrip households to position Safeway as the “team destination” for Gatorade multi-packs. In-store, shoppers interacted with “Fuel a School” signage at front-end Gatorade displays and along the perimeter.“Fuel a School” resulted in a double-digit increase in average units per transaction. It redefined how Gatorade partnered with a key grocery customer to provide shoppers with value beyond price, while positioning Safeway as a destination in local communities.BelVita Launch, Kraft Foods (G2 USA)When Kraft launched BelVita at Safeway, it faced two challenges. First, BelVita is a breakfast biscuit — a brand new category to U.S. shoppers. Second, BelVita would be stocked in the cookie aisle, where shoppers do not typically shop for their breakfast needs.To change shopper behavior, communications were developed based on consumers’ breakfast path-to-purchase, from pre-trip list making through locating the product on shelf. Direct mail pieces with coupons were sent to targeted Safeway shoppers that kicked off the quasi-scavenger hunt for BelVita.Once inside the store, floor graphics captured shoppers’ attention at the entrance of the aisle, leading them to BelVita’s unexpected location. Bright yellow colors, reinforcing BelVita’s packaging, and intriguing headlines that conveyed the brand’s playful and energizing personality, broke through the clutter and positioned BelVita as a wholesome source of energy for breakfast.Pringles Gravity-Feed Display, Procter & Gamble (Saatchi & Saatchi X)Previously, the brand’s visibility was typically confined to just the Pringles can. The Pringles “Gravity-Feed Display” allowed Pringles to stand out from the end of the aisle — an aisle shoppers may not have even planned on walking down as they thought about “chips.” It commanded attention by offering a unique delivery shelving system with clear communication that made the flavors jump out at shoppers.The display required unique engineering and construction to accommodate the cans, as they were not truly cylindrical and easy to roll. In addition, the differing weight of the chips inhibited a steady and fluid delivery, which the display also addressed. It was also very easy for employees to re-stock the display, driving its longevity.By organizing the product in a space-saving design, the Pringles Gravity-Feed Display offered maximum real estate for communication and recognizable brand equity. It also helped secure incremental out-of-aisle placement. Based on sales results, it is now in 1,350 Walmart stores.Recipe for Success, LifeScan OneTouch (The Integer Group)By leveraging the impact food has on people with diabetes, Recipe for Success highlights LifeScan’s OneTouch as not only a diabetes meter and strip provider, but also as a partner in their diabetes care.Recipe for Success combined two of the most important elements of good diabetes management (food and testing) to create a one-stop shop for better, and more simplified, diabetes management and diet selections.Program components included grocery guides to help shoppers find diabetes-friendly selections, carbohydrates and carb counts. It provided recipe take-one booklets with diabetes-friendly recipes, as well as coupons and shelf flags providing tips, carb counts, and meal ideas. Circular ads and posters promoted the program at local retailers.Recipe for Success created a presence for OneTouch in the food channel, outside the pharmacy, and helped create additional revenue opportunities for retailers. It has been placed in 7,000 stores, including Supervalu, Publix, and Bi-Lo. Its success generated retailer requests to create a second phase of the program featuring celebrity chef Sam Talbot.
