They also were more likely to either purchase the advertised product the same day (15% vs. 4%) or plan on purchasing the product in the future (85% vs. 62%). The study was conducted by market information group TNS at more than 5,600 geographically dispersed Wal-Mart stores with the company's "next generation" TV networks. With the addition of the Diedrich locations, the network currently includes 53 locations at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores, Spectrum Health Clubs and high-rise office buildings in Southern California. Campaigns running in the 53 locations deliver more than 1.2 million unique impressions per month. The number of locations will increase to 75 by January 2006 and 150 by March 2006, according to ActiveMaps.Besides advertising, content on the network includes real-time traffic updates, sports scores by ESPN, entertainment and fashion news by E! The software evaluates in-store radio results with the same media currencies as those used for traditional radio. Operated by ShoptoCook, Buffalo, NY, the kiosks will also roll out to Giant Carlisle stores. Shoppers who scan UPC barcodes receive printable recipe ideas and ingredient lists. Ahold owns the hardware and ShoptoCook manages the content and promotional support. Product vendors can pay to brand ingredients.Kroger Trial to Monitor Exposure to In-Store Radio Aug. 25, 2005 -- In September, 100 Kroger stores in the Houston area will monitor exposure to in-store radio advertisements using "Portable People Meter" (PPM) technology from Arbitron.Carried throughout the day by randomly selected survey participants, the small PPM devices can track when and where participants watch television, listen to radio and interact with other forms of media and entertainment. In-store radio content supplied by In-Store Broadcasting Network will be embedded with inaudible codes that the PPMs can detect. At the end of the day, the meter is placed in a docking station that extracts the codes and sends them to a central computer to aggregate exposure data.The trial will enable Arbitron to provide measures of return on investment by correlating local media exposure with retail store traffic. Best Buy, Gap, Gallery Furniture, National CineMedia and Old Navy are also participating in the Houston PPM demonstration.Source: ArbitronShop 'n Save to Install Digital Signage in 35 Stores Aug. 5, 2005 -- Supervalu subsidiary Shop 'n Save Warehouse Foods will install digital signage systems in 35 stores throughout Missouri and Illinois. Seattle-based Limelight Media Group will install new signs in 19 stores that previously featured signs operated by another digital signage company (Interactive Graphic Solutions). New installations in 16 locations without existing systems will bring the total network to 35 stores, with the potential of adding the system to more stores as they are opened. Limelight expects the installations to be completed within 45 days. The acquisition is subject to the usual regulatory requirements and is expected to close during the fourth quarter.The announcement follows the cancellation of PRN's planned initial public offering of common stock. PRN operates digital signage networks for Wal-Mart, Albertsons, Costco, Best Buy, Circuit City and Sam's Club, through which it claims to reach 200 million viewers per month.Thomson's brands include RCA, Technicolor, Grass Valley and Thomson. Thomson's Services Division manages electronic content for a variety of distribution channels including broadcast, cinema, corporate and retail. Capabilities include post-production, content preparation activities and the management of digital media centers. The content will air one time per hour for up to five minutes of every 60-minute programming loop.Source: PRN Corp.Aisle Screens Outperform Perimeter Locations in ASDA Tests April 26, 2005 -- A recent test of in-store TV at British supermarket chain ASDA, owned by Wal-Mart, showed that screens positioned in aisles achieved better ad recall and prompted more sales than screens positioned in the retailer's main shopping path, "Action Alley."The six month study conducted by POPAI UK & Ireland used 21 screens in each of two stores. Sales lift from displays in aisles was 10.2%, versus 7.1% for Action Alley locations. Store-wide sales uplift was 8.7 percent. Ad recall in aisles measured 44%, versus 24% in Action Alley. Both systems used double-sided 42-inch screens.Content was a mixture of ASDA and brand partner messaging. Intallation is complete in more than 100 stores in California, with the entire network to be operational within 90 days.The flat-panel touchscreens, operated by Navitouch, feature a mix of local weather, traffic maps, news, and 30-second advertising spots. A series of navigation buttons on the right side of the screens enable shoppers to select content and ads they wish to view. An attached card swipe enables immedate puchases.The Navitouch kiosks are networked via cellular broadband, so installation requires only a standard AC plug. In-Store Radio Linked to Event Promotions March 14, 2005 -- Mass Connections and the In-Store Broadcasting Network (IBN) have teamed up to offer Audio Connection, a new service that broadcasts a product's promotional message over in-store radio while Mass Connections' personnel conduct an in-store event. IBN's network extends to more than 13,000 retail stores. Participating retailers include Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Ahold, Walgreen's, Rite Aid and their subsidiary chains. For the service, IBN broadcasts a specific product's promotional message over the entire retail store. As customers browse the aisles, they hear the message and are drawn to the promotion location. Early independent research findings indicate that Audio Connection lifts sales as much as 200 percent in a single week, according to Mass Connections.Source: Mass ConnectionsWal-Mart to Upgrade TV Network Feb. 22, 2005 -- Wal-Mart has begun to upgrade the conventional TV screens used in its TV network with 42-inch high-definition LCD flat screens and speaker systems that beam sound from the ceiling, The New York Times reported. Some 600 of the screens are to be installed by December and eventually every store will have them. Wal-Mart also plans to tailor its broadcasts more specifically to individual stores and store departments, based on regional tastes and situations. The system is owned and operated by SignStorey Inc. and will consist of 42-inch plasma screens broadcasting a combination of brand advertising, consumer education content and customized messaging from Pathmark.According to AKA.TV, each Pathmark store will have one screen split into three content zones. The right one-third of the screen features Pathmark weekly specials, new product information and department information. The left two-thirds shows a six-to-eight-minute loop of 50% consumer content and 50% advertising, with ads running 15 to 30 seconds. The results from ACNielsen's 2004 study show a 44% increase in Wal-Mart TV Network viewing duration (among viewers 10 and older) as compared with Nielsen's 2002 study. In addition, Wal-Mart TV Network continued to deliver a strong message that its viewers remember, maintaining a high average brand recall (unaided/aided) of 65% percent among the commercial audience.According to the new study, the network delivered 44,857 gross impressions per store for the four-week period measured by Nielsen. PRN reports that the network is currently installed in approximately 2,620 Wal-Mart stores. "This is the fourth study that we have done for PRN using our standard intercept methodology to statistically represent the full Wal-Mart Television Network," said Beth Corbett, Vice President of Nielsen Media Research. "We applaud PRN for providing regular measurements of performance to their advertisers. Having audience data available on a regular basis greatly facilitates the buying and selling of advertising. We believe that this policy enhances the value of PRN's networks as well as the credibility of this innovative advertising medium."The study found that shopper attitudes toward the Wal-Mart Television Network were extremely positive, with 84% percent of viewers agreeing that the network is a good thing for Wal-Mart to offer its customers and 80% percent agreeing that the network is informative. About the Study: Nielsen Media Research's New Media Services fielded intercept interviews and enumeration counts for a statistical probability sample of affiliated Wal-Mart stores, dates and dayparts. During a 28-day measurement interval of April 19-May 16, 2004, traffic counting and interviewing took place over 57 dayparts in 56 different network stores. Intercept interviews were completed with 3,851 store visitors 10 years of age or older as they exited the main store exits. Sample stores were selected from the 2,503 total affiliated stores installed with Wal-Mart Storewide TV in the U.S. as of December 2003. Quincy, MA-based Stop & Shop has piloted the wireless, Web-based system for self-checkout, information, deli orders and targeted offers in three of its stores. It plans to roll the device out to 20 additional stores in the first quarter of 2005. The monitor was set up on the end of a trellis-style island merchandiser, above a display of tomatoes, avocados, packaged chopped onions, lemons, limes and fresh salsa. Bristol Farms has a revenue-sharing agreement with Purchase Point Solutions, a San Diego-based integrator of digital advertising that manages and distributes the content, which will be updated every 30 days or so. There are plans to put in more monitors throughout the store, and at other stores in the chain. Bristol Farms was acquired by Albertsons in September 2004. Pleasant, Calif. Bi-Lo plans to install kiosks in three additional stores in the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant, S.C., area later this month, according to Wine Insite. Shoppers tell the kiosk what they are seeking in a wine -- such as type, country or price range -- and it provides guidance on wines in the store, including price, varietal/grape, origin, style and food/cheese pairing. More than one dozen celebrities from returning shows 7th Heaven, One Tree Hill and Reba, and new shows Summerland and Blue Collar TV, will wear Kmart's new fall apparel in the retailer's back-to-school TV advertising and marketing campaign. In addition, The WB's stars will wear Kmart apparel in multiple episodes of the participating shows.In-store promotions will include appearances by WB talent, in-store radio spots, P-O-P materials, shopping bags featuring the WB logo, and loops airing WB's programming highlights on TV sets.
