Retailers Help Shoppers Make Healthy Resolutions

Retailers are ringing in 2005 with a variety of promotions aimed at resolution-minded consumers. Among the chains undertaking health-themed activity this week: ShopRite hosts a contest from General Mills and Unilever Bestfoods inviting consumers to submit their "live right" healthy recipe for a chance to win $5,000. Participants can enter in four categories -- breakfast, lunch/dinner, snacks and desserts -- with recipes that must include one eligible product each from General Mills and Unilever. The chain also is offering $5 off when shoppers buy five participating General Mills or Unilever products. The contest kicks off ShopRite's "Live Right" in-store program, which flags select products with color-coded signs identifying them as fat free, low fat, organic, natural, low sodium, sugar free or wheat/gluten free. Support for the contest and program includes a two-page feature in the chain's Jan. 2 circular. Meijer weighs in with several promotions, including an offer for $5 off a Weight Watchers bath scale with the purchase of three select Kellogg products and another for $10 off men's or women's activewear with the purchase of $10 in PepsiCo's Smart Spot products. (Pepsi is attempting to reposition certain products as healthy alternatives by tagging them with Smart Spot logos.) The offers are featured in Meijer's Jan. 2 circulars. Elsewhere, the chain will host a "Healthy Living" day on Jan. 8 featuring in-store demonstrations and giveaways of a free calendar from ConAgra Foods' Healthy Choice. The event also includes a sweepstakes dangling a trip to the Pebble Beach golf resort in California and a separate online contest awarding a "healthy living makeover." The promotions are featured in Jan. 2 circulars. Ahold USA's Tops Markets and Giant Carlisle divisions host an offer from Healthy Choice delivering $3 off produce with the purchase of seven products. Ahold's Stop & Shop and Giant Landover divisions, meanwhile, offer a $3 checkout coupon with the purchase of six participating items from Healthy Choice rival Stouffer's Lean Cuisine (Nestle Foods). Hy-Vee and Diet Coke team to offer a $5 discount on the registration cost for state-sponsored fitness contests in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. In-store support includes displays. Giant Eagle offers $2 off a package of Fresh Express bagged salad with the purchase of four Smart Start or Special K products from Kellogg Co. Sears, Roebuck & Co. offers either a free companion airline ticket from Vacation Ventures or zero-percent financing until January 2006 when shoppers spend $299 on fitness equipment. The offer is featured in Sears' Jan. 2 circular, as well as on the sears.com homepage.Kmart offers a coupon for 50 cents off any product from low-carb product manufacturer Atkins Nutritionals. Walgreens hosts a "Lower Your Net Carbs and Raise Your Net Worth" sweepstakes from Russell Stover dangling a grand prize of $10,000.
