Totino’s Plays Games at Walmart

General Mills’ Totino’s recently wrapped an account-specific sweepstakes at Walmart that supported the brand's desired positioning as the official snack of gaming. Shoppers who purchased a qualifying Totino’s SKU at the retailer from April 1 through May 31 could upload a receipt through a promotional web page (Totinos.com/NintendoSwitch) to enter the sweeps. Forty winners received a game-night prize package comprising a Nintendo Switch OLED video game console, a carrying case, a Joy-Con controller set and copies of Nintendo’s Mario Kart Deluxe 8 and Mario Party Superstars. A hundred runners-up won a copy of either of the two games. All entrants also received 100 platinum points for the video game company's My Nintendo rewards program. Southfield, Michigan-based Merkle administered the promotion. A homepage carousel ad on Walmart.com linked to a promotional showcase that plugged the sweeps and offered recipes for “game night flavors.” "We’re excited to team up with Nintendo again to help families transform any gaming session into a flavorful party packed with personality, pizza and fun," Ryan Harrington, vice president, Walmart sales at General Mills, said in a media release. Totino’s also ran an exclusive sweepstakes at Walmart from May 1 to June 30, 2021, to tie in to the Nintendo Switch release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Shoppers who purchased a specially marked box of Totino’s pizza rolls or a party pizza pack could win one of 30 prize packages comprising a Nintendo Switch, three Pro Controllers, a download code for the game, and a 12-month family membership to Nintendo Switch Online. One hundred runners-up received the game. Both efforts are part of the brand's Walmart-specific gamer strategy, which focuses heavily on overcoming the hurdles of gaming with mom.
