Chatsworth, Calif. -- Consumers can reach out and touch their products -- and push a holographic button or turn a holographic page -- with the second-generation Air Touch technology interface available from Provision Interactive Technologies Inc. The system allows three-dimensional holograms to float in front of shoppers and for their hand motions, such as a finger "pushing" on the image or other gestures, to cause the image to change or take action. These can include printing out coupons or other promotional material. Consumers can interact and manipulate 3-D holograms.The original version used sensors to allow shoppers to point at the hologram in a particular location to trigger a single response, such as printing out a coupon, explains Curt Thornton, president and CEO. The new system uses a series of cameras and sensors to register a variety of movements based on different locations in the hologram to interact more fully, achieving different effects based on the movement and location. These can include turning the page with a sweeping motion or dragging, grabbing or pointing at graphics within the hologram to perform different functions.The system is designed to work in a kiosk, typically the most effective approach, as well as in a wall or hanging display, says Thornton. The images can be projected from about 6 inches tall to as large as 50 inches depending on the space and size of the equipment.The most effective applications, he notes, will come from one-on-one shopper interactions, with holograms that are approximately 12 to 18 inches. The company has begun working with the Fred Meyer chain in Portland, and has developed a variety of applications with overseas firms. "A lot of our success has been overseas to date, but we are focusing now on opening the U.S. market," he says. Prime uses include retail stores, trade shows and new product launches in a variety of sites.Costs for the system depend on size and volume, with a smaller unit ranging from $3,000 to $5,000, with larger running up to $10,000 per unit. The company will sell the hardware and software system, or it will create partnerships with retailers and brand marketers to offer a "digital media platform" that can be used for a variety of brands in one location.
