DreamWorks Animation's Shrek the Third has stomped back into stores on DVD, flanked by a court of promotional partners.Distributed by DreamWorks and Paramount Home Entertainment, the film debuted Nov. 13 in DVD and HD DVD formats. DreamWorks publicly forecast the DVD to be a “top performer” during the holiday season and a “primary revenue driver” for the fourth quarter, while a joint press release touted the campaign as “the largest, most comprehensive marketing program ever.” The studios host a “Get Shreked” instant-win game awarding five grand-prize “HP Digital Home Makeovers” containing $3,500 in Hewlett-Packard electronics. Additional prizes include HP notebook computers, Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles, LG phones and photo prints from HP's Snapfish online service. Shoppers peel off a game piece on the DVD to reveal a prize.According to the studios, promotional tie-ins will be communicated in five FSI drops and on nearly a half-billion product packages. P-O-P vehicles include banners, standees, corrugated displays and in-store TV programming, with holiday-themed displays featuring a “Shrek the Halls” message. Reinstating many partners from the film's May release (see “Third Shrek's a Charm ...” in Related Articles), tie-ins include:ConAgra Foods features characters on product packaging and hosts an “Are You a Shrek-spert” trivia game awarding three $1,000 Visa gift cards and licensed merchandise. Participants play online with UPCs from Act II, Crunch 'n Munch, Peter Pan and Hunt's Ketchup, Manwich or Snack Pack. The promotion began Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. ConAgra also awards a $3 rebate on the combined purchase of the DVD and five participating products. A Nov. 11 FSI communicated the promotion. (See Related Articles.) Kroger chains hosted an overlay awarding free packages of Crunch 'n Munch and Act II with purchase of the DVD. Energizer offers a $3 rebate on purchase of either two packages of MAX batteries or one package of Lithium, Titanium or Rechargeable batteries with the DVD. Campbell Soup Co. offers a $5 rebate with purchase of the DVD and 10 Campbell's SKUs, using a Nov. 4 FSI to communicate the offer. (See Related Articles.)  Toshiba leverages the film's HD DVD format in TV spots for its third-generation HD DVD player. Shoppers who buy the player receive three participating movies on HD DVD.  McDonald's brings Shrek back for another Happy Meal program, adding eight new toys and themed apple dippers and milk jugs. Blockbuster hails the release with an “Ogre the Top” sweeps awarding five Samsung plasma TVs and four Caribbean vacation packages from Travelocity. Entry is automatic with any DVD rental or through a Shrek microsite. Blockbuster also leverages the title for an online “Great Gift Giveaway,” awarding Hawaii vacations from Travelocity, hotel stays from Starwood Hotels, Blockbuster rental cards and packages of ConAgra's Orville Redenbacher's popcorn. Both promotions began Nov. 13 and run through Jan. 14, 2008. Stores support with window clings, floorstands and a dedicated in-line section. Blockbuster also carries exclusive licensed board games, popcorn tins and toys.Other retailer promotions include:Wal-Mart merchandises exclusive bundles of the DVD and a plush character from Ty's Beanie Babies. Pallet displays in Action Alley carry the bundle and promote the “Get Shreked” game. Supervalu's Albertsons, Jewel-Osco and Shaw's awarded six free SKUs to shoppers who purchase the DVD with their loyalty cards from Nov. 11-17. Participating products include Kellogg's cereal and Keebler SKUs, PepsiCo's Sierra Mist, Mountain Dew and Lay's Stax, General Mills' Go-Gurt, private-label napkins and Redbox DVD rentals.  Safeway chains offer an instant $10 savings on the DVD with a $30 loyalty-card purchase of Procter & Gamble's Bounty, Millstone, Mr. Clean, Gain, Puffs or Cheer. The offer runs Nov. 13-27.  CVS offers ExtraCare cardholders a $10 coupon for the DVD with a $20 purchase of select P&G items. (See "P&G's brandSaver ..." in Related Articles.) Best Buy awards an M&M's package and HP “Shrek-Tastic” activity disc with purchase of the DVD; a $10 gift card with the DVD and a Shrek video game; and a licensed activity book with any DreamWorks DVD. Best Buy also donates $3 to its Toys for Teens program for each DreamWorks DVD purchase. Macy's awards an exclusive plush toy for $14.95 with a purchase of at least $35 overall.Additional exclusive DVD bundles include:a Shrek Santa Hat at Kmart.a NOW Music Shrek CD at Targeta licensed watch at Circuit Citya limited-edition print at Toys “R” Us.The third highest-grossing animated film, Shrek the Third generated more than $793 million in box office earnings.Elsewhere, DreamWorks is generating buzz for Bee Movie, which hit theaters Nov. 2. The theatrical release boasts promotional ties with the National Honey Board, General Mills' cereals and Betty Crocker fruit snacks, Sioux Honey's Sue Bee, Pez Candy and Brach's Confections. Meanwhile, McDonald's leveraged the film for a campaign with Conservation International encouraging kids to “Bee Good to the Planet.” Characters appeared on Happy Meal toys and packaging on healthy menu items from Oct. 26 to Nov. 15.
