Sears Hosts H&R Block Tax Services

Sears is again hosting in-store H&R Block offices during tax season. (See "Retailers Count on Tax Season" in Related Articles.) Stanchion signs and circular features publicize the service. (See Images at right.)The retailer promoted Valentine's Day merchandise with a "Love It" slogan on ceiling signs and floorstands. (See Images at right.)The chain leveraged the National Football League's Super Bowl in January-February with a microsite that had consumers voting for their favorite TV spot starring NFL player Brett Favre (and entering the aforementioned "Meet Your Match" sweeps). Favre has starred in a series of humorous spots -- many of which touted Samsung TVs -- beginning in September 2009.Also in February, Sears launched an online "Ultimate Prom Experience" that lets shoppers browse dresses and accessories, get hair and makeup tips, determine their "Ultimate Prom Style" and download a planning checklist. A related sweeps awards his and her apparel ensembles and $250 in spending money to three winners. Entry is online from March 2-31.Other Promotional ActivitySears teamed with CBS Interactive to conduct a contest awarding a grand-prize trip to a Survivor casting call in Los Angeles. Contestants entered from Jan. 18 to Feb. 21 by submitting 30- to 60-second videos explaining why they have "what it takes to win" the popular reality series. Judges selected 10 finalists, with the winner picked by online public voting from Feb. 22 to March 5. Circular features supported. Sears is the official sponsor of Survivor's casting calls.Cause MarketingSears teamed with AMVETS this winter to stage "Operation Blanket," which collected blankets for military veterans. Shoppers who donated a gently used blanket at stores from Jan. 31 to Feb. 18 received a coupon for 20% off home fashion merchandise or 10% off housewares, luggage or furniture.CircularsIn recent activity, Sears offered: a free Blu-ray player (valued at 199.99) and free delivery with purchase of select Samsung televisions from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6. a $5 store gift card to shoppers whose in-store purchases are not available for pickup at merchandise kiosks or curbside within five minutes. two free champagne flutes with a $35 purchase of fragrance, bath or cosmetics products from Feb. 7-13. a free (after mail-in rebate) 19-inch Sharp television with purchase of select Sears-O-Pedic mattress sets.
