BJ's Wholesale Club is staging a scaled back version of its "Power of Pink" campaign in support of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" this October. The retailer dropped its annual "Pink Picnics" event series (see "BJ's Picnics ..." in Related Articles), instead running a "Power of Pink Weekend Event" on Oct. 5-6 consisting of demonstrations and sampling from 26 partnering brands. The partners provided custom packaging carrying a "Power of Pink" logo and joined with BJ's to pledge an unspecified donation to the nonprofit National Breast Cancer Foundation.A Sept. 25 email ad promoting the event directed recipients to the permanent bjsforpink.com website, which lists the participating brands, links to NBCF's earlydetectionplan.org, and contains a downloadable coupon for a free 60-day trial membership. An Oct. 1 Facebook update also linked to bjsforpink.com.Procter & Gamble has the strongest presence among the 16 participating manufacturers, providing pink SKUs of Bounce, Bounty, Downy, Herbal Essences, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Swiffer and Tide. The manufacturer typically leads the effort. (See "Brands Paint BJ's Pink.") Other participatants include General Mills (Fiber One), Clorox Co. (Glad), Mars Inc. (Dove), Nestlé-Purina (Purina One) and Kao USA (Curel).BJ's has contributed approximately $2.3 million to breast cancer research since beginning its efforts in 2006.
