Amazon's Grocery Surge: How Perishables, AI, Speed Are Reshaping Retail Growth

Amazon is leveraging fresh grocery fulfillment, agentic AI and ultra-fast delivery to drive massive cross-category shopping and campaign performance.

For Amazon, grocery is no longer simply a standalone category — it is the primary driver for cross-category retail growth.

During its Q3 2026 earnings call, Amazon executives highlighted the intersection of everyday essentials, rapid fulfillment and the AI infrastructure powering the future of commerce. While Amazon has historically dominated the "middle aisles" (consumables and canned goods), fresh groceries are now growing three times faster than the rest of Amazon's store business and represent about half of all units sold.

Amazon is utilizing same-day perishables to build habituation and spark a marketplace-wide halo effect. The strategy is working: Customers who shop for perishables via same-day delivery buy seven times more everyday essentials. Furthermore, grocery shoppers shop four times more non-grocery categories — such as home and apparel — and spend twice as much in those categories compared to non-grocery buyers.

The company is also aggressively expanding its catalog, noting a 20% year-over-year growth in premium brand selection, with callouts for newly added or expanded brands such as Banana Republic, La-Z-Boy and The Farmer's Dog.

Other key takeaways for marketers:

AI is Shifting Retail Discovery

Artificial intelligence is actively changing how users find products. More than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping over the past year, with interactions surging 570%. U.S. customers utilizing Alexa for Shopping spend 50% more per order. Amazon has added over 100 new AI capabilities to its shopping ecosystem. For today's sellers, highly accurate product information and metadata are critical, as AI assistants and bots are increasingly making automated purchasing and recommendation decisions based on those data points.

Fulfillment Speed as a Conversion Driver

In Q3, Amazon delivered more than 1.5 billion items to Prime customers same-day or overnight. The company is actively accelerating fulfillment and cutting costs through regionalized inventory placement and better package consolidation. More than 1 million robots are now deployed across the fulfillment network to automate repetitive tasks and speed up outbound shipping.

Amazon Ads Agent vs. External Bots

Management noted that "agentic shopping" from external, horizontal AI agents is not yet having a meaningful impact on Amazon's ecosystem – the experience is still less convenient than shopping a retailer directly. Instead, the focus is squarely on Amazon Ads Agent. Powered by trillions of shopping and streaming signals, the platform brings Amazon's full advertising suite under a single AI umbrella. Advertisers supply initial inputs like budget and duration, and the AI plans, executes and optimizes full-funnel campaigns across sponsored ads, display, video and streaming TV.
