Packaging Embeds Scent

Hamilton, Ontario -- Transparent Packaging Inc. of Canada has created a scented transparent packaging box that shows the product and incorporates scent right into the material. The packaging is available in more than 60 scents, “and we can do custom ones, too,” says Nash Krishnasamy, public relations and media and communications and operations officer for Transparent.“It is used for packaging, and it also can be used in point-of-purchase displays,” Krishnasamy notes.“What makes it unique is that the scent is applied onto the graphics,” he explains. “There are no stickers applied for the scent,” which, he notes, can compromise the image.“Another important premise is the combination of clear plastic with scent,” Krishnasamy says, creating a “combined power of attraction” in “multi-sensory packaging.”A typical packaging run would be from 3,000 to 5,000. “Smaller quantities can be done, but the prices may be higher,” he notes.The scented printing “is proprietary technology of micro-encapsulation,” Krishnasamy explains. Scents can last indefinitely, and each rub or scratch of the surface releases three-to-five percent of the scent.For packaging materials, “we have PLA corn-based compostable plastic, PET, post-consumer recycled PET, PVC, and PP,” he noted. Gauges range from 200 to 500 microns, and sizes and shape are per client specification including square, rectangle, triangle, octagon, and cylinder. Several carton closure and hanging configuration options also are available. Packaging is created using clean hydropower and does not contain any ozone-depleting substances.Printing can be solid or translucent, with options including silkscreen, litho, foil stamp, and holography. “We print, but we also have an associated firm that prints, too,” Krishnasamy says.
