How Emerging Brands Expand the Promise of Retail

The shelf is no longer where brands are built. It's where actual culture is formed.

This started with the transformation of commerce online. Communities, creators and social platforms have collapsed the distance between cultural relevance and commercial success, allowing a new generation of brands to build demand and scale at unprecedented speed.

That transformation is now reshaping retail. Retailers are moving beyond simply adding emerging brands to the assortment. They are redesigning how they partner, merchandise and monetize, creating ecosystems where emerging and legacy brands can both thrive.

Partnerships Fuel Growth at Retail

The first transformation changed how brands are built. The second is changing how retailers grow.

Emerging brands go beyond simply expanding choice to actually expanding opportunity.

Consumers increasingly arrive at retail with a brand already in mind, one they discovered through creators, communities or culture. Those brands create new trip missions, bringing shoppers into stores for brands that didn't exist a decade ago. What begins with a single sought-after brand becomes an opportunity for broader discovery, with retail media, introducing other new brands, new occasions and new reasons to return.

The value exchange is reciprocal. Emerging brands are intentional about where they invest, choosing retailers that can help accelerate growth. In return, they contribute something equally valuable: Cultural relevance, engaged communities and owned channels that amplify the retailer's reach beyond the store. Growth is no longer created by the retailer or the brand alone, it is created through the partnership.

Evolving Retail Media

The third transformation is happening inside retail media. Emerging brands are directly driving the evolution of retail media and benefiting from it. Their pace of growth, unique investment patterns and need for flexibility encourage networks to rethink how they partner with brands at every stage of the journey.

The model is expanding beyond standardized solutions. Self-service platforms remain an important entry point for brands testing and scaling their investment, while dedicated account teams are helping emerging brands build growth strategies that align media, measurement and commercial objectives. These teams bring a deeper understanding of where brands are today and where they can go next, adjusting capabilities and investment approaches as the partnership matures.

Many retailers are breaking down the silos that once separated media from the broader commercial relationship. Retail media is becoming more integrated into joint business planning, creating a more holistic approach that connects media investment with the larger growth strategy between brands and retailers.

A Transformational Collaboration

Target is bringing an emerging brand mindset to its collection. The retailer is known for collaborations with beloved brick-and-mortar brands, popular with younger audiences and is often considered luxury.

In the past six months Target partnered with aspirational brands like Love Shack Fancy, Roller Rabbit and Rosie Assoulin. The intent is clear: Bring in the younger audiences with brands they love that are potentially inaccessible due to cost, and make them accessible.

Now Target is trying a different angle. Not making a branded product accessible but making a branded persona accessible in a physical store.

Target's back-to-school collaboration is with none other than Gen Z influencer Olivia Dayton for its Wild Fable brand. Dayton has more than 1 million followers tracking her lifestyle vlogs, hairstyle tutorials and beauty tips. Target is bringing that significant digital following right to their physical store with clothing designed in collaboration with Dayton. In addition, Olivia offers styling tips exclusively to the Target shopper.

From Digital to Physical

The final transformation brings digital brands into the physical world. If data powers retail media, the store brings it to life.

Emerging brands have mastered digital storytelling. They know how to build communities, generate demand and create cultural momentum online. Physical retail gives them a new medium for that same storytelling. Retailers are expanding the in-store toolkit, enabling brands to translate digital momentum into physical experiences, from endcaps and sampling to immersive activations that turn a shopping trip into another chapter of the brand story.

The convergence of culture and commerce has transformed more than the path to purchase. It has transformed how brands grow, how retailers create value and how retail media enables both. The retailers embracing this shift aren't simply making room for emerging brands. They're building ecosystems where emerging and established brands strengthen one another, creating more value for every participant in the retail landscape.
