Buy Me, Read Me, Nibble Me Say Corrugated Displays

Nibble Me Books hopes consumers will gobble up the product introduction it has slated for this month: a line of educational children's books integrated with sweet treats. To help introduce the books, two displays will feature them at retail.Nibble Me books combine children's favorite candies with interactive stories and colorful graphics to provide children between the ages of three and seven with an entertaining way to learn basic preschool concepts. The child follows the instructions of Nibbles the mouse to eat certain dots of candy. By eating the correct candies while reading a Nibble Me story, children gain knowledge and understanding of basic educational concepts, such as counting and colors, and develop motor skills, says Deborah D'Andrea, president of Akron, Ohio-based Nibble Me Books.This month's introduction unveils the line's first holiday story, "Christmas Buttons," which incorporates candy buttons from NECCO Stark of Cambridge, Mass. January 1998 will see three additions to the line, with "gummi" and "jelly" candies from Herman Goelitz Inc., Fairfield, Calif. Nine books are slated for introduction over the next several months, with these and other candy manufacturers participating. Some of the books will be themed for upcoming holidays such as Easter and Halloween.Nibble Me's sweet stories are being merchandised in four-color, corrugated counter and floor displays, each with its own header. The counter unit holds 12 books with two facings while the floor display, which is two counter displays set together, holds 24 books with four facings. As the floor unit sells down, the books may be consolidated into a single countertop unit."We chose a disposable, corrugated process targeted for the mass market, from which most of our sales will come," reports D'Andrea. "The corrugated approach is also ideal for merchandising our holiday titles, which are in-and-out promotions."Nibble Me's displays are intended to last three to four months in mass merchant locations and slightly longer in the other targeted markets, which include drugstores, supermarkets, book, gift and candy stores.The displays and headers were designed by Jamestown Container Cos.' midwest production office in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, which also produced the 75,000 floor units and 25,000 counter displays. Artwork was developed in-house. The floor unit measures 20 inches wide by 51 inches high by 18 inches deep, while the counter unit measures 10 inches wide by 24 inches high by 15 inches deep. Both displays are free to retailers who buy the units stocked.D'Andrea notes that all the pieces were produced using a direct printing process. "Direct printing is more expensive upfront, since we pay for large printing dies, but in the long-run it is more economical for large print runs like ours," says D'Andrea.
