Walmart Veteran to Helm Family Dollar
Family Dollar named former Walmart chief merchant Duncan Mac Naughton as president and chief operating officer. He replaces Gary Philbin, who was promoted to enterprise president of Family Dollar's parent company, Dollar Tree.

Mac Naughton most recently served as chief executive officer of Midwestern value retailer Mills Fleet Farm. He previously was Walmart's chief merchandising and marketing officer from 2011 to 2014 and prior to that served as vice president of consumables, health and wellness and walmart.com, and chief merchandising officer for Walmart Canada. Before joining the mass merchant, he spent three years as executive vice president, merchandising and marketing for Supervalu.
"I relish the opportunity to grow and improve the Family Dollar business," Mac Naughton said in a media release. "Our focus will continue to be on meeting the everyday needs of our customers – through providing terrific values, affordable prices, and the right assortment in clean, convenient and shopper friendly stores."
Philbin has helmed Family Dollar since chief executive officer Howard Levine left the company in January 2016. In his new role, he will oversee store operations, merchandising, marketing and real estate for both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores. He continues to report to Dollar Tree ceo Bob Sasser.
“Since joining Dollar Tree in 2001 as senior vp of stores and later as president and coo, [Philbin] has played an integral role in our growth, success and sector-leading profitability," Sasser said in the release. "With his experience at Dollar Tree, Dollar Tree Canada and, most recently, his outstanding leadership as president of Family Dollar, [Philbin] is uniquely positioned to contribute to our continued success in his new role as enterprise president.”
