Wal-Mart Distributes Nickelodeon's Choices

Wal-Mart is again teaming with Viacom's Nickelodeon to sell exclusive compilation CDs and DVDs promoting the network's Kids' Choice Awards on March 31.Released March 1, the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, Vol. 3 CD features 16 recently released pop songs from artists including Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Justin Timberlake. Kids selected the tracks when they cast their votes for the awards show. The retailer also carries DVD two-packs comprising a Nickelodeon movie title and bonus Kids' Choice Winner's Collection DVD, as well as exclusive licensed toys. Wal-Mart is merchandising the products on pallet displays in Action Alley, and featured them in its March circular. Additionally, the chain sponsors the "Favorite DVD" category at the awards, and is encouraging shoppers to vote online by entering codes found on the displays. New Creature, Rogers, AR, designed the displays.Wal-Mart sells an assortment of licensed Nickelodeon Consumer Products, including toys, apparel, electronics and books. In 2006, the retailer designated March as "Nick Month," featuring the promotion in circulars and filling Action Alley gondolas and toy department endcaps with licensed merchandise. The chain has announced plans to offer episodes of Nickelodeon series on its forthcoming digital download service. The retailer began carrying exclusive Kids' Choice merchandise in 2005.Excluding its Sam's Club division, Wal-Mart announced domestic sales of $226.3 billion for fiscal year 2006 (ended 1/31/07), an increase of 7.8% from the previous year. Comparable-store sales rose1.9%. Fourth-quarter 2006 sales increased 6.7% from the previous year to reach $64.2 billion, with a 1.3% increase in comparable-store sales. Wal-Mart, Bentonville, AR, operates 2,195 supercenters, 1,092 discount stores and 110 Neighborhood Markets nationwide (as of December 31, 2006).
