Ovalette Puts Its 'Ovals' In Displays

New Rochelle, N.Y. -- Ovalette Brands LLC played off the word 'oval' in many ways for Flip-a-Mint, the company's latest mint brand. Not only are the mints oval-shaped, but the candy maker also designed a thin, oval package and a slick, oval-shaped display that can be stacked up to four units high. Both the new mints and the displays began shipping to retail channels in June."Everyone loves it," says Stephen Wolff, president, about the display. "It's different and unique looking. It's artsy, with a free-form design that works with the package to attract consumers to it and then to the product. The display definitely enhances the package's design."The process of introducing the new product with its distinctive package and display began more than a year ago, Wolff notes, with both elements serving as integral parts of bringing the product to market. "We wanted to find a unique design that would work functionally to hold the products but also could be successful in the marketplace at attracting attention."The display, produced by Colony Plastics Inc., Long Island, N.Y., features an injection-molded plastic body shaped like a number eight. The mint packages slide out of slots in the side of the display. The container bodies can be molded in transparent blue or green.Wolff says the display was originally designed to serve as a wall unit, without a base. Plastic ties would be used to attach it to the wire grid at a checkout counter. To expand its function, designers created a chrome-plated bar on which the oval holders stand. Two rubber washers were added, one on each end, to prevent the piece from sliding. The chrome-plated base provides an architectural-looking design for the secondary piece that doesn't detract from the oval design.A four-color, oval-shaped header attaches to the top mint-holder, continuing the oval design while identifying the product. "The header and the additional oval containers, especially in the four-oval size, draw attention to the product and help elevate it above counter level," Wolff explains.The company also offers a countertop shipper using the same graphic with a die-cut header that includes a half-oval shape to continue the theme. But it's the distinctive plastic display that is drawing retailers' attention, Wolff says. A total of 2,500 displays and corrugated shippers were produced for the first run, with subsequent runs to follow.Flip-a-Mints come in four sugar-free flavors -- pepper-mint, chocolate mint, winter-green and cinnamon. They're dispensed easily from their packages via a "flip" top.
