The Call of Fame

Once again, we're calling for nominations to the Shopper Marketing/In-Store Marketing Institute Hall of Fame. This time, we'll be inducting the Class of 2011.BACKGROUND: Every year, the Hall of Fame, which was initiated in 1994, honors three consumer product marketing and retailing executives for their achievements in-store. You are invited to submit the name(s) of a retail or brand executive who you think is a candidate for such an honor.RULES: If you work for a consumer brand or retail chain, feel free to nominate a colleague, your boss, or even yourself. If you work for an agency or a producer, nominate your retail and/or brand clients, but not your boss or yourself -- you are not eligible.WHO: There's no cookie-cutter formula for who should be nominated. Past honorees represent all sorts of expertise ranging from corporate management, marketing and insights to sales, merchandising, supply chain, creative, and so on. Basically, if you can honestly describe your candidate as having a passion for in-store/shopper marketing, plus integrity, creativity and business insight, then consider nominating them.Take a look at the capsule bios (at right) of the three inductees from the 2010 Class. Clearly, this is not one of those "retired old codger" Hall of Fames.HUH? The phrase "shopper marketing/in-store marketing Hall of Fame" is subject to interpretation. For some, the term "shopper marketing" denotes a very specific function or group on an org. chart, such as the retail account teams. In other companies, it's more of a generalized umbrella term for the management of integrated functions along the path to purchase. The same holds true for the term "in-store marketing." Sometimes, it denotes a coordinated, company-wide effort; sometimes, it just refers to the person who buys displays.We believe in a "big tent" approach that has room for representation from different retail channels, product categories or marketing specializations.WHEN: Please submit your nominations -- by mail, fax or online -- by Nov. 20.HOW: You can fill out the 2011 Hall of Fame nomination form at www.instoremarketer.org/hof.UM... They'll be profiled in early 2011 issues of Shopper Marketing magazine, and will join 50 past recipients on the "Wall of Fame" at the In-Store Marketing Institute's headquarters.
