P-O-P Design Competitions Announce Top Awards

Skokie, Ill. -- Frank Mayer & Associates Inc. recently took home the top awards in two P-O-P industry contests. On Sept. 22, the Grafton, Wis.-based company won P-O-P Times' Design of the Times '04 Best of the Times award for its MasterBrand Cabinets Thomasville Selection Center. The previous day, Sept. 21, Point-of-Purchase Advertising International (POPAI) announced that Mayer won the association's Display of the Year award -- Permanent category -- for its BMW X3 Portable Wireless Kiosk.According to Mayer, the use of urethane on the Thomasville merchandiser, which has been placed in more than 1,500 Home Depot stores across the country, reduced the cost of the display by more than 50%. It features a traditional branded urethane header, and color-matched urethane columns and cornices, all designed to simulate handcrafted millwork. The urethane was formed in tooling created from an actual wood carving to simulate the wood grain.Screenprinted drawer-front identification labels make it easy for consumers to identify each style. A powdercoated metal panel with a c-channel features the four-color Thomasville branded message.The merchandiser showcases 124 doors, more than 40 pieces of door hardware and eight separate drawer fronts. Direction lighting in the header accents individual doors on the unit, and the overall planogram can be altered.Mayer's BMW X3 Portable Wireless Kiosk mirrors the contours of the new BMW sport activity vehicle: Shaped like a surfboard, it is meant to appeal to the active lifestyle of the BMW X3 target audience. It integrated the thematic, graphic and copy elements of the X3 advertising campaign.The kiosk has been placed in locations such as ESPN Zone, Jet Blue Terminals, Virgin Megastores, Vail Resorts, Galyans and BMW showrooms across the country to build awareness of the new vehicle. Wireless technology means the kiosk can be connected to the Internet for news updates and product information in any venue. Its internal structure, base and CPU housing are made of silver powdercoated metal, and a large, changeable graphic panel enables company representatives or retailers to promote new products, accessories and special BMW events. The entire unit folds down and fits in the back of a BMW X3. A total of 200 units were ordered, and all were placed in the field."It's an extreme honor to receive both of these awards with our clients and partners in the two respective projects. From what I understand, no other company has done that," says Mike Mayer, president. "It's humbling -- there's a lot of good creative that was out there as competition for us, so to be able to walk away with both of the top honors in two separate days was a lot of fun."Rand Display International Inc., Teaneck, N.J., also won POPAI Display of the Year honors (Semi-permanent category) for its Pocket Paks Injection-Molded Power Wing. The unit's dump bins mimic the shape of the product dispensers, and process printed, pressure-sensitive labels were used on them and on the header. The Temporary Display of the Year award, also in the POPAI competition, went to TimBar Packaging & Display, Hanover, Pa., for its TurboTax/Staples Pallet Display. The display consists of a litho-printed riser, two litho-printed graphic panels and four flexo-printed product trays, all printed in five colors. To give the unit a more finished look, all "corrugated raw edges" were eliminated during the design process.
