House of Tsang Introduces Take-Out Meals, Soups

Recognizing a need for restaurant-quality Oriental food at the corner grocery store, House of Tsang recently introduced Take-Out meals and Instant Oriental Soups. The products represent a departure for Hormel Foods' House of Tsang division, which has previously sold just Oriental sauces. "These [food products] reflect the same level of authenticity as our flagship sauces," says Eric Spenske, product manager for the Austin, Minn.-based company. Take-Out, currently in test markets, contains all the makings of an Oriental meal, from noodles to fortune cookies. Instant Oriental Soups come in five flavors and are currently in stores nationwide.Hormel executives say they hit the mark when they decided to use easy-to-assemble corrugated display shippers for both products. "We've had great success with prepacks in the past," says Spenske. But because the company felt that many of its instant soup competitors were using display units that were too big and held too many soups, Hormel created one that holds a more manageable amount of product in a relatively small area. With just 72 soups per unit, the display is a "weekend merchandiser," says Spenske, that should enable retailers to sell the product out in a short period of time.The soup and Take-Out displays ship as a rectangular box with a fold-out base and a header card inside. The bases are black with red trim, and the header cards use photography developed for the House of Tsang print ad campaign. The soup display is divided into four parts that hold 18 containers of soup each; it measures 22 inches wide by 51 inches high by 19 inches deep. The Take-Out display holds 24 boxes.Spenske classifies the response to the instant soups as "exceptional," and says that those displays have been popular with retailers because of their small size, just as Hormel had hoped. The Take-Out product will continue in test markets for an indefinite period of time. Both displays were created by the Smythe Co. in Minneapolis.
