Target is deepening its commitment to accessible design through a new partnership with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, who has been named the retailer's first-ever creative director at large.

In the newly created role, Mizrahi will work closely with Target's internal design organization to help shape product innovation, mentor creative talent and identify new opportunities for partnerships and brand experiences. The move reinforces Target's positioning as a retailer that combines style, design and value while seeking to strengthen its cultural relevance with shoppers.

"Great design is deeply human — it ignites confidence and joy, and it's what guests tell us they love about shopping at Target," Cara Sylvester, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, said in a media release. "[Mizrahi] has always believed, as we do, that great design should be accessible to everyone."

Mizrahi will advise Target on:

  • Product and design initiatives: Working alongside Gena Fox, senior vice president of design, Mizrahi will consult on new product concepts, design innovation and emerging trends while identifying partnership and experience opportunities that strengthen Target's design leadership.
  • Talent development: This summer, Target will launch a mentorship program that will provide select designers direct access to Mizrahi through one-on-one mentoring, workshops, creative immersion experiences and inspiration trips.
  • Brand storytelling and experiential initiatives: Mizrahi will support design-focused collaborations, community engagement efforts and other initiatives intended to elevate Target's brand presence.

The appointment comes as retailers increasingly look beyond traditional merchandising strategies to differentiate through brand identity, experience and emotional connection with shoppers. For Target, design has long served as a key competitive advantage, helping the retailer stand apart in a crowded value retail landscape.

"Target is poised to be the design authority in a way only Target can," Mizrahi said in the release. "My role is to collaborate with its incredible team to bring more joy, style and sophistication to design through storytelling, creativity and a shopping experience that feels even more fun."

Through the partnership, Target aims to continue delivering distinctive products and experiences while expanding the role design plays across its merchandising and brand strategy.

Why it matters: While celebrity and designer partnerships are nothing new for Target, creating a dedicated creative director at large position signals a more institutionalized approach to design leadership. Rather than focusing on a single product collection, the retailer is tapping Mizrahi to influence talent development, innovation and brand strategy across the organization, signaling a broader investment in design as a long-term business differentiator.
