Sobeys Expands Electronic Shelf Label Installation

After a 50-store trial, the Canadian grocer has ordered 5 million digital tags.

Empire Co. Ltd. supermarket chain Sobeys has ordered 5 million electronic shelf labels (ESLs) to be installed across its Canada footprint.

The order follows an initial launch at 50 stores. At the time of the June trial, no stores were named. A news release issued by JRTech Solutions described it as an order from a Tier 1 North American grocery retailer. 

JRTech Solutions, a Canadian ESL provider and distributor of global tech company Pricer’s Electronic Shelf Labels, will install the technology.

The roll-out of Pricer’s in-store automation and communication platform, which consists of cloud-based Pricer Plaza and ESLs, is expected to be finished by the end of April 2026. 

"After one year of thorough testing with a pilot installation and the first wave of successful deployments in 50 stores, we can clearly see how our in-store solution supports this leading retailer in digitizing and transforming their operations while enhancing their focus on customer experience," Mats Arnehall, chief commercial officer at Pricer, said in a news release.

It will be the first large-scale full-store deployment of four-color labels in North America, per ther release.
