You can do anything, but don't step on my Foster Grants, especially if they're a pair originally worn by Elvis Presley. In May, Dallas-based Foster Grant shipped hundreds of stand-up displays featuring Elvis wearing his 1974 Foster Grants. The life-size Elvis cut-out, made from an original color photo of the King of Rock and Roll, directs shoppers to the company's latest promotional sunglasses.The corrugated King display holds 36 pairs of sunglasses and a pad of sweepstakes entry forms. Five first-place winners will receive a trip for two to Graceland on Elvis' birthday, January 8, 1998. The grand-prize winner will be announced at Graceland and presented with Elvis' personal pair of Foster Grants, along with a certificate of authenticity."Elvis has great stopping power," says Bill Potts, vice president of marketing for Foster Grant. "This stand-up display is drawing tremendous attention and offers the ability to spotlight our stylish promotional sunglasses. It gives the product a great presence at retail."Designed in-house and manufactured by Haggar Container of Dallas, the 35-inch-wide, 70-inch-high and 16-inch-deep unit is four-color process printed with a header card that attaches with die-cut tabs. The display has been placed in major drugstores, supermarkets and mass merchants including Eckerd, Payless and Revco.Foster Grant's new display is easy to assemble: the primary unit arrives in two folded pieces that hook together with tabs. Retailers simply attach the pieces, insert the header and stock the sunglasses. A corrugated easel back support holds the unit in place.The pair of Foster Grants was worn by Elvis when he took his daughter, Lisa Marie, to the Ice Capades in 1974. Foster Grant recently bought the shades -- the first ever to be worn by Elvis -- at an Elvis memorabilia auction after company executives saw them featured on national television.The company is also offering a limited-edition replica of Elvis' original sunglasses ($39.99 plus postage and handling) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death (August 16, 1997). Order forms for the sunglasses are available on the hang-tags of the promotional sunglasses now being displayed by the King. Each pair is identified by a numbered hologram that is kept on permanent file. Less than 10,000 replicas will be sold.In addition, until November 30, 1997, shoppers can purchase any pair of Foster Grant sunglasses and MGM Elvis Commemorative Collection videos and save $3.00 when they mail in the sunglasses' proof-of-purchase with video rebate coupon.
