Empire Co. Ltd.’s Scene+ loyalty program launched two holiday campaigns in November.

Empire, the parent company of Canadian grocer Sobeys, unveiled a “Window Wonderland” program on Nov. 22 at all its banners (save for Marche Bonichoix, Farm Boy and Longo’s) centered around gift cards. Special offers from Scene+ partners across several categories, including grocery, dining, shopping, travel, movies and entertainment, let shoppers buy gift cards and earn loyalty points as they spend.

A Black Friday promotion offered discounts and bonus points from partners, including up to 40% discounts and triple rewards on Scene+ Travel bookings through Expedia and 3,500 bonus points when buying a one-year CineClub membership from Cineplex, available through Dec. 4 and Dec. 2, respectively. (One thousand Scene+ points can be redeemed for 10 Canadian dollars at participating stores, including Empire grocery and pharmacy banners.)

A survey conducted by Retail Council of Canada and Leger determined 42% of Canadians found gift cards to be a flexible holiday gift option. In the same survey, respondents named holiday home entertaining — particularly, food and alcohol — as a top category for seasonal spending.
