Pep Boys Has 'Happy Holidays'

Pep Boys' "Happy Holiday Shopping" campaign played out on ceiling and stanchion signs near entrances that highlighted "Something for everyone on your list." (See Images at right.) The featured items included gift ideas for spouses (a GPS system), "Grandma" (highway emergency kit), "Grandpa" (truck toolbox), kids (scooter) and even "best friend Jack" (ATV).The chain's Dec. 20, 2009, circular touted "last minute gift ideas" such as a Baja Motorsports ATV and Razor electric scooters and dirt bikes. It also highlighted power tools and equipment, including a Kawasaki cordless drill, a Great Neck impact wrench, a Torin two-ton trolley jack and a UST (U.S. Tsubaki) air compressor.Pep Boys kicked off its holiday activity with a Thanksgiving Day circular detailing a three-day sales event. Stores opened at 6 a.m. on Black Friday (Nov. 27) to conduct five-hour deals on Pro Stop brake pads, Monroe shocks and struts from Tenneco Inc., and Champion sparkplugs, as well as oil-change products from Exxon Mobil Corp.'s Mobil 1, Castrol GTX and Purolator.Circulars later in the season promoted store gift cards as a "great stocking stuffer" and offered BOGOs on such items as Old World Industries' Peak antifreeze, Lucas Oil Products' fuel treatment and Shell Oil's RainX Latitude wiper blades.Online, Pep Boys promoted "Hottest Deals on the Coolest Gifts," offering coupons for a Coby Electronics portable DVD/CD/MP3 player for $54.99 and 10% off any GPS system or car audio purchase. The coupons expire Jan. 31.Elsewhere, the chain wrapped up its "Year-End Tire Celebration" on Dec. 27. The annual event was promoted with signage and circular features. (See Images at right.)Store GrowthPhiladelphia-based Pep Boys operates 554 stores in 35 states. In October, the company announced the acquisition of Florida Tire, a service and tire provider with 10 locations in Orlando, FL. "This acquisition fits squarely within our stated strategy to grow through service and tire centers," Pep Boys chief executive officer Mike Odell said in a release.Including those additions, Pep Boys expects to have added approximately 25 service and tire centers when fiscal 2009 ends on Jan. 31. The company is planning 40 new locations in fiscal 2010 and 80 in fiscal 2011.
