Target Investing $5 Billion to Modernize Store Experience
Target plans to expand its store remodel plans for 2026, unveiling its most ambitious undertaking in more than a decade.
Stores slated for remodels will boast updated layouts that will be easier to navigate and include features that enhance the in-store experience.
Target says its stores are at the heart of its shopping experience, serving as a key differentiator, as do its exclusive collaborations and only-at-Target items. Plus, the retailer has found that the store experience is a key contributor toward long-term growth, sharing that its remodeled locations tend to have a low- to mid-single digit sales lift in addition to higher traffic and more engaged shoppers.
Going forward, Target is investing approximately $5 billion this year, which will go toward more than 130 remodels and 30 new stores. The 30 new stores are scheduled for several priority markets, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York and Philadelphia.
Updated Experience
Target says each remodel is done with the guest experience in mind, offering convenience and inspiration.
Key updates include:
An expanded dry grocery selection as well as more everyday essentials and pantry staples. Some locations will house larger fresh and frozen food sections.
Modern decor and fixtures that include special LED lighting to bring a vibe that's both cool and inviting. New signage is being installed to make navigation easier.
Merchandise displays — including apparel, accessories, beauty and home — will be more engaging.
Updated spaces and expanded services to support order pickup, drive up, exchanges and returns. Traditional checkout and express self-checkout lanes are being revamped to improve the flow and convenience.
Modernized amenities that include restrooms with designated spaces for nursing mothers.
Select locations will get natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting and HVAC systems to help lower emissions and energy costs.
Target is also leveling up its assortment in key categories such as health and wellness, beauty, baby, home and women's styles. Curated items will be set out in expanded, dedicated spaces.
With 76% of U.S. households within 10 miles of a Target, its physical locations offer opportunities to explore as well as support its fulfillment services. Enhancing its in-store experience also creates a more seamless link between Target's digital and physical store spaces, giving shoppers the opportunity to spend however they choose.
"These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop," Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president, Target Properties, said in a media release.
