McMullen to Take Kroger Reins from Dillon

Kroger has announced that president Rodney McMullen will become chief executive officer when David Dillon retires at the beginning of 2014.Dillon, who has worked at Kroger for 37 years and served as ceo since 2003, will remain chairman of the board through the end of next year.McMullen got his start at Kroger in 1978 working part-time on a stocking crew and later held a variety of senior management positions including vice chairman, chief financial officer, and executive vice president of strategy, planning and finance. He was promoted to president in 2009."Rodney has played a leadership role in every major decision Kroger has made for the past 25 years, including the development and implementation of [the] 'Customer 1st' approach as well as our current growth strategy," Dillon said in a media release announcing the succession plan. "I have been honored to lead this great company for over 10 years and look forward to assisting Rodney and the board in the transition."McMullen's successor will be named at a later date, the company said.In other executive moves, Steve McKinney was promoted to president of the Fry's division to succeed Jon Flora, who died unexpectedly in September. McKinney has served as vice president of operations for the Ralphs division since 2007. Earlier in his 31-year Kroger career, he climbed through the ranks at Fry's from store manager to vp of operations.Fry's operates 119 stores and pharmacies and 70 fuel centers in Arizona.
