Display Incorporates RFID Tracking

Chicago -- Smurfit-Stone has created the SmartDisplay, the latest in its line of radio frequency identification (RFID) products for companies who want to track inventory and measure P-O-P effectiveness.SmartDisplay, first showcased along with the company's other RFID products at Pack Expo in November, provides item-level tracking and inventory management for retailers. RFID labels are embedded on products displayed in a corrugated shelving unit with built-in antennas, says the company. The label can be read even when inside a display."It has the RFID readers built into the shelves of the display. That's something we patented," says Pat Harrington, director of marketing for the packaging company. "As the primary packaging is built with RFID tags, it would register the movement of the packaging on the shelves." The signal transmits back electronic product codes wirelessly to a central computer, she adds.As such, the SmartDisplay provides real-time inventory data. The computer link is capable of automatically placing an order for more inventory when the stock runs low, by notifying either an employee or a local distribution center, according to the company. Product shrinkage also is addressed with the SmartDisplay. The RFID reader also can be set so that store personnel is notified if large amounts of product are removed from the display shelf.The RFID technology can be incorporated into any type of display and can be used by any consumer products company, Harrington says. "The technology can be put into any display we manufacture," she says. "It doesn't necessarily have to look like the SmartDisplay."
