Walmart Canada to Invest $6.5 Billion in Stores, Supply Chain
Walmart Canada plans to spend $6.5 billion Canadian dollars over the next five years to expand its store network and supply chain.
Dozens of new Canadian stores are planned, beginning with five Supercenters in Ontario and Alberta by 2027.
The Port Credit Walmart Supercenter, which will open in Mississauga, Ontario, in the summer of 2025, followed by an Oakdale store at Hopedale Mall later in the year.
Three new Alberta Supercenters are slated to open by 2027 in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray.
The Vaughan Distribution Center, billed as Walmart Canada’s most advanced facility, will also open in spring 2025.
"Walmart Canada is on an ambitious growth journey to serve even more Canadians — better and differently than ever before," Gui Loureiro, regional CEO, Walmart Canada, Chile, Mexico and Central America, said in a news release. "And as Gonzalo Gebara finishes his last few weeks as president & CEO of Walmart Canada, before returning home to Argentina, I want to thank him for his strong leadership and vision in driving these growth plans." (Walmart Canada has selected Venessa Yates to take over Loureiro's role.)
The announcements come as Walmart Canada closes out a $3.5 billion investment in Canada, first revealed in 2020.
Over the past four years it’s:
Modernized more than 180 stores — including the transformation of its Mississauga-Square One Supercenter into its flagship location;
Opened four brand new stores: two new locations in Victoria, British Columbia (Hillside) and Montreal, Quebec (Marche Central) and two relocated stores in Edmonton, Alberta (Kingsway) and Vaughan, Ontario;
Invested more than $800 million on the Cornwall Distribution Center, Surrey Distribution Center, Rocky View County Fulfilment Center, Moncton Distribution Center and the Vaughan Distribution Center — all set to open this spring.
Canada Cartage Partnership
Walmart Canada also announced a new partnership with Canada Cartage. The provider of fleet services will buy Walmart Canada’s fleet business.
"Canada Cartage has deep expertise in providing dedicated fleet services and has been serving Canadian businesses for more than 110 years," Matt Kelly, vice president of supply chain, Walmart Canada, said in the release. "Through Canada Cartage we can serve customers even better and more flexibly and provide fleet employees with exciting growth opportunities at one of Canada’s largest and most trusted supply chain service providers."
