Walmart Canada has selected Venessa Yates to be its new president and chief executive officer as Gonzalo Gebara prepares to step down.

Yates joined Walmart in 2016, most recently serving as senior vice president and general manager of the Walmart+ membership program. In the past, she’s also held leadership roles at retailers including Woolworths and Aldi.

Gebara, Walmart Canada’s current president and CEO, revealed he’ll be leaving the company at the end of February, following a 25-year career with the retailer. Gebara, who assumed his current post at the end of 2022, is returning to Argentina to be with his family and pursue other interests, according to a media release.

"[Yates] is a tremendous retail leader with experience in multiple countries and functions," Guilherme Loureiro, regional CEO, Walmart Canada, Chile, Mexico and Central America, said in the release. "She is the right person to continue to drive Walmart Canada's growth trajectory and its transformation to become the country's leading omnichannel retailer."
