Suunto USA Debuts Display for Cebe Sunglasses

Suunto USA, importer and distributor of high-tech camping gear, started the year off right with its first display for Cebe sunglasses.In February, 100 counter displays began shipping to outdoor and sporting goods stores throughout the United States. Cebe International, a French brand, manufactures the kind of sport optics that climbers wear when scaling mountains, says Lauren Zimmerman, director of marketing at Carlsbad, Calif.-based Suunto. The glasses retail for between $30 and $160.Although this is the fifth year Cebe products have been available in the United States, this is the company's first domestically designed and produced P-O-P display. Until now, the manufacturer simply offered Suunto its European P-O-P items, which Zimmerman describes as ill-suited to the U.S. market. "Stuff that works in Europe generally doesn't work in the U.S.," she says. "We've received some pieces for glass cases that were too tall for us and some big, heavy, freestanding units that just sat in our warehouse."The new unit, created by Mountain View, Calif.-based Concept Designs Inc., "is super light and easy to put together," Zimmerman says. "We're hoping with this one that we'll get them out and into stores."The 6-inch-wide by 10-inch-high by 10-inch-deep waterfall unit, designed for use on countertops and in cases, is made of Europly, a multi-layer maple laminate composite base with a powder-coated steel backbone. Four pairs of sunglasses sit on screenprinted, high-density foam shelves that provide support without the risk of scratching the lenses.Under the distributor's arrangement, Cebe picked up the tooling costs while Suunto pays for the actual quantity produced. Retailers receive the units free of charge with a minimum buy-in.Zimmerman says she expects the unit to have a shelf-life of at least three to five years.
