Lowe's stores last month installed "recycling centers" that consist of dump bins for unbroken compact fluorescent light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, cell phones and plastic shopping bags. The bins are located near store entrances. The items are subsequently shipped to recycling facilities. In related activity, Lowe's partnered with Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp.'s Call2Recycle program to host collection drives at stores in Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth. The effort was part of the nonprofit's "MyCall2Recycle" campaign, which aimed to collect one million pounds of batteries from mid-July through Oct. 1. Local radio spots supported. (Call2Recycle, which has partnered with Lowe's since 2004, also works with RadioShack and Staples, as well as Stanley Black & Decker tool brand DeWalt.)In other recent sustainability efforts, Lowe's: recycled 166,000 tons of wood pallets, 147,000 tons of cardboard and 400 tons of shrink wrap in 2009 as part of its pallet recycling program, now in its fifth year. expanded its appliance-recycling program to all stores last spring.
