PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast is giving consumers a new way to look at the brand this summer — on a beach with Hollywood’s ultimate tough guy, enjoying a refreshing soft drink.

At the center of the "Have a Baja Blast" campaign is a 30-second spot airing across national linear television, streaming platforms and social media channels. (See video below.)

The commercial drops viewers into "Baja Beach" — a sun-drenched tropical paradise where 20-ounce bottles of Baja Blast grow straight from palm trees. Legendary actor Danny Trejo reprises the spirit of his iconic Machete character for the spot, complete with a machete in hand.

Trejo isn't a tough guy this time, though. Instead, his mission is to chop the tops off Mountain Dew Baja Blast bottles and enjoy the refreshing, tropical lime flavor that has made the product a fan-favorite for more than two decades.

"With 'Have a Baja Blast,' we wanted to create something that feels as fun and refreshing as the drink itself," Michael Smith, vice president of marketing for Mountain Dew, said in a company release. "Bringing Danny Trejo and his machete into this wildly imaginative Baja Beach world allowed us to lean into the kind of unforgettable storytelling that keeps fans coming back for more."

Set to a Baja-style remix of the 1990s classic "No More I Love You's" song, the spot was directed by sketch writer and director Dan Opsal. The brand partnered with creative agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners for the effort.

The campaign builds on other recent investments for the brand, including its "Get a Baja for a Blast" product reward promotion that runs through September.
