CVS Revamps Mobile App
CVS Health has revamped its mobile app and introduced new features, including the ability to open locked display cabinets in select test stores using the app.
The app, previously branded as CVS Pharmacy, is now the CVS Health app. The redesign is one of many initiatives underway at the drugstore chain to improve the health care and customer experiences, while alleviating in-store pain points, according to a Jan. 28 media release.
"As a company, we are super-focused on improving the health care experience," Tilak Mandadi, executive vice president at CVS Health, said in the release. "The CVS Health app will make it easier for our customers to access and manage their health and care, save time and money, and make informed decisions about their health."
CVS is testing a capability that allows in-store shoppers to open locked display cabinets in three pilot stores using the app to access the merchandise.
Mandadi told the Wall Street Journal that, “People really, really dislike locked cabinets,” so the retailer is trialing a feature that allows loyalty program members unlock cabinet merchandisers by using their phone. To activate the feature, ExtraCare members at one of the test stores must be logged into the app, connected to the store Wi-Fi and have their device’s Bluetooth enabled. Mandadi told WSL that results are positive so far, and the next step is to roll out to 10-15 stores, and ultimately a full-scale rollout.
Other new and improved mobile features include:
- A redesigned and personalized home screen that features a health "to do" list and recommendations, including reminders to refill medications, updates on upcoming appointments and savings opportunities.
- Enhanced, AI-powered search that helps shoppers locate products, services and information from across CVS Health and select third-party content providers.
- Health and wellness content offered through external partnerships, including educational articles from Everyday Health — reviewed by medical professionals — as well as guided meditations from Headspace.
- Expedited checkout on prescription pickups using a personalized bar code.
- Simple immunization scheduling.
- Easier access to health spending and benefit details for eligible CVS Caremark and Aetna members.
Many of these enhancements to the app were underway throughout 2024, and CVS will continue adding app capabilities and features this year focused on convenience, affordability and simplification for consumers, according to the retailer. Some features still to come in 2025 include:
- Personalized recommendations and educational content for patients managing chronic health conditions, including details on relevant cost savings and copay assistance programs.
- A conversational AI chat experience that enables patients to check medication refills, status of their orders and more.
- Digital offerings and partnerships designed to help consumers find holistic care and support.
"The app is the health concierge and guide for all consumers," said Tony Ambrozie, senior vice president and chief digital and technology officer, CVS Health Pharmacy and consumer wellness. "With 60 million digital customers, we are excited to continue to innovate and bring best-in-class and first-in-industry capabilities to our customers."
