Whole Foods Market Scales Daily Shop Concept Into 3 New Cities
Whole Foods Market is reinvigorating its urban expansion with Daily Shops openings in three new cities. Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia will host the small-format markets, which are built around a curated, condensed product mix rather than the sprawling floor plans typical of a full-size location.
Each store will offer fresh produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods, bakery items and a selection of the retailer's private label 365 by Whole Foods Market line, with a shelf mix also intended to reflect local and regional suppliers.
Though no official opening dates have been announced, the grocer confirmed that the three Daily Shops will open in the following locations over the next two years:
- 111 Harbor Way, Boston
- 1200 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago
- 2221-2225 South Street, Philadelphia
"Daily Shop is an important part of how we’re growing our physical store presence," said Christina Minardi, VP of real estate and store development at Whole Foods Market and Amazon. "As we expand this smaller format into new cities, we're continuing to deliver the same high standards and carefully curated assortment Whole Foods Market is known for, in a way that meets our customers' everyday needs."
According to the company, the condensed format also doubles as a testing ground. The store's layout and product placement are specifically engineered to surface high-demand items and cut down on decision fatigue, with fixtures and merchandising approaches that can feed back into how Whole Foods supermarkets are designed — at any size. Stephanie Curley, senior manager of growth and innovation, noted that the stores are "designed with intention at every level, from layout to assortment."
"We’re able to introduce new merchandising approaches and fixtures that make it easier for customers to find what they need while still delivering the quality and discovery they expect from Whole Foods Market," Curley said.
Whole Foods first launched its Daily Shop format in New York City in 2024. The concept has since spread across the New York metro area, into several states and across the pond in London, where the first international Daily Shop opened this past April.
Additional stores in both London and the New York area are also slated to open later this year.
Parent company Amazon is also taking advantage of its web of small-format locations to launch its new 30-minute delivery option in several U.S. states throughout 2026. The Amazon Now delivery service, first piloted in Seattle and Philadelphia, is coming soon to communities in Austin, Houston, Minneapolis, Denver, Phoenix and more.
