Target is advancing its plan to open more than 300 stores over the next decade with the debut of a large-format location in Denton, Texas.

The Denton North store (T-2917), which opened in April, is the retailer’s second in the city and spans approximately 147,000 square feet — making it one of Target’s largest new builds to date. According to a corporate news release, the store exemplifies the future of Target’s large-format strategy.

The extra space allows for an above-average fresh and frozen food and beverage section, including organic produce, a bakery and a deli. Additional space also supports special departments such as an Apple at Target shop-in-shop, a Starbucks Cafe and an extensive assortment of school supplies and sports apparel aimed at local students.

The backroom area is roughly five times larger than that of older stores of similar size, providing enhanced fulfillment capacity to support same-day services like Drive Up and Order Pickup.

The store also benefits from proximity to Target’s Dallas sortation center and its Denton-based food and beverage supply chain facility, which serves 158 stores across Texas.

Target selected Denton for its “high growth potential.” The area is home to the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University and is undergoing "rapid development," with new highways, homes and businesses reshaping the landscape alongside traditional ranches and farmland.

Part of a Larger Growth Strategy

The Denton North store reflects Target’s broader strategy, announced in 2024, to invest in long-term growth and enhance the guest experience. That strategy includes opening stores, like Denton North, that serve as stores-as-hubs model, as well as upgrading existing locations.

In Texas alone, two additional stores are slated to open later in 2025, with at least five more planned for the Dallas metro area in the coming years. Nationwide, Target expects to open or upgrade around 20 stores in 2025, with more on the way through the next decade.
