Meijer Continues to Expand Neighborhood Market Format
Meijer is bringing its small-format neighborhood market grocery format to Metro Detroit’s Independence Township.
The new 50,000-square-foot store will open on April 30 at 5820 Waldon Road, Clarkston, Michigan. Independence Market will provide a new grocery destination for customers from Clarkston and all of Independence Township, including the new Waldon Village development, Meijer said in a news release.
Independence Market will feature a large assortment of grocery items, including fresh meat and deli items, fresh produce, a bakery, and Meijer and national brand items. It will also carry thousands of local products, including coffee from Shaded Bloom Coffee Roasters, skincare products from Allow Nourishment and ice cream from Cook's Dairy Farm. Additionally, the market will feature:
- A floral and gift shop
- Health and beauty care products
- Pet food and supplies
- A cafe space, featuring coffee and Latin street food from popular local business Honcho
The neighborhood market format was created to extend the retailer's reach to places where it can't build a supercenter. The first location opened in 2018 in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. The retailer expanded the smaller-format store out of Michigan in January 2024 with a 40,000-square-foot store in Cleveland.
"Our team has been working hard to get the store ready to open with a great assortment of local and national brand products and we can't wait to welcome our neighbors next month," Robert Lajcaj, Independence Market store director, said in the release.
The store will employ approximately 80 team members.
Meijer, a family owned regional retailer, operates more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations throughout the Midwest.
