Infographic: The Grilling Season Shopper

About 85% of shoppers purchase items for a grilling occasion or barbecue no more than a few days in advance, according to data from Breaktime Media.

Breaktime surveyed shoppers on their grilling season habits, including when they typically start to grill out and which products are most important.

Similar to past years, burgers still top the list after being chosen by 40% of respondents. The go-to condiments are barbecue sauce and ketchup while buns and breads are the most important item in the other grilling products catchall category in the survey.

Many shoppers do not wait for seasonal events such as Memorial Day weekend to start grilling out. In fact, 40% of respondents indicated they start grilling as soon as their local weather reaches warm temperatures.

Then 33% of shoppers say they grill out all year, no matter the temperature.

About 6-in-10 shoppers typically feed between 2 and 4 people when they grill out.

Some of the biggest grilling challenges reported included timing all the dishes and dealing with the weather.

Here are ways brands can engage and educate shoppers as they prepare for grilling season:

  • Encourage trial by using a customized personality quiz to recommend personalized products from your brand, based on a shopper's grilling habits.
  • Showcase recipes featuring your brand's products that shoppers can use as inspiration for upcoming grilling holidays.
  • Encourage shoppers to share their best grilling creations using your products with a social giveaway.
