Market Position and Strategy Overview
Market Position and Strategy Overview
Ranked as the U.S.'s 13th largest privately owned company by Forbes, Meijer operates 266 supercenters spread across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The seventh largest grocer in the U.S., Meijer has been expanding its e-commerce capabilities, offering click-and-collect at all stores while partnering with grocery delivery service Shipt in all of its markets.
Most stores sell more than 220,000 different products. While other mass merchants have struggled to get general merchandise shoppers to use them for trips they might make to a supermarket or drugstore, Meijer has found success expanding baskets across categories. The retailer puts fresh produce at the front of stores and offers full-service delis, butcher shops, bakeries making custom decorated cakes, and pharmacies that provide clinical services, immunizations and free prescriptions. All stores have garden centers that also provide fresh floral arrangements and many locations have an adjacent gas station and convenience store.
Meijer builds loyalty in part by being highly active in the communities where it operates. The retailer donates more than 6% of its net profits to charitable organizations each year and sponsors numerous events and area sports teams . It also emphasizes local products ranging from produce to beer.
While Meijer can't compete with channel rivals Walmart and Target on scale, it has a reputation for being one of the most collaborative retailers in the industry. Meijer regularly runs exclusive promotions with major CPGs that often leverage its mPerks digital coupons program.
Must-Know Terms
Must-Know Terms
- mPerks: Meijer's answer to a loyalty program lets registered shoppers use their phone number at checkout to redeem clipped coupons and earn rewards from bulk purchases.
- Simply Give: A cause campaign Meijer runs three times each year soliciting in-store donations for area food banks. The spring campaign is tied to the sponsorship of a LPGA tournament.
- Meijer Curbside: A click-and-collect program.
- Bridge Street Market: A small format banner.
Thought Starters
- Meijer's extensive range of categories and willingness to collaborate makes it a great place to promote your new products or national campaigns.
- The regional retailer is very grounded in the Midwest so bring sponsorships and events tailored to that market.
- Meijer continues to open small format, urban stores that will resemble supermarkets rather than supercenters. Consider bringing them new solutions for the channel.
Promotional Strategy
Promotional Strategy
Prices are cheaper than at grocery stores since Meijer is able to balance those sales with higher profit margins on general merchandise. Short-term promotions typically focus on the mPerks rewards program, though BOGO, BOGO for $1 and “buy one, get one 50% off” deals along with “10 for $10” offers are also common.
Prior to the pandemic the retailer worked to build trips by regularly hosting tasting events, sometimes with brand partners. Pharmacies encourage visits by offering some common medications for free, including oral generic antibiotics, prenatal vitamins and treatments for diabetes and high cholesterol.
For 2023, Meijer announced it was offering a wide selection of turkeys at varying price points, including Meijer brand frozen turkeys at 59 cents a pound through the last Saturday in November. The retailer also is offering several other options, including frozen and fresh from its own brands as well as from Honeysuckle and Butterball. The retailer is also offering other protein options such as hams, rib roasts and tofu turkeys.
Ongoing/Periodic Programs
- Baby Week: Meijer holds periodic baby week promotions, with deals on diapers and more.
Merchandising
Merchandising Strategy
Meijer stores carry more than 220,000 SKUs. The arrangement of departments varies by store, but all Meijer locations have significant health and beauty care areas with pharmacies, a consumer electronics department, a significant seasonal section, aisles devoted to toys, auto care and home goods, and large fresh produce, pet care and apparel offerings.
Meijer is considerably more focused on fresh groceries than other mass merchants. Stores stock 600 varieties of produce, with many stores retailing 150 USDA-certified organic items, and have full-service meat and seafood departments offering custom cuts. In 2022, the retailer began an avocado ripening pilot in which it set up large ripening rooms at its distribution center in Lansing, Michigan, where it can regulate conditions so every avocado ripens consistently and deliver the fruit to shoppers at the earliest stage of ripeness. The same year, Meijer launched single-serve, ready-to-heat meals in its deli to expand its offering for shoppers looking for quick meal solutions.
Bakeries provide custom-decorated cakes and bread baked in-house four times per day. The retailer is particularly focused on local products including produce, fish and craft beer. The retailers’ three new stores that opened in 2021 also stock general merchandise items more often found in specialty stores.
Meijer redesigned all of its apparel departments between 2016 and 2017 to move plus-size SKUs from a separate area into the traditional product mix. The change allowed the retailer to stock more styles from XS to 3X on the same rack for the same price.
![Meijer pet department](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/meijer_pet_dept_halloween2019_22.jpg)
The retailer has also placed a focus on its pet department, with stores that opened or were remodeled after May 2017 having a larger category assortment in an expanded space. The department has its own version of Action Alley and uses in-line displays to promote the retailer's extensive selection of natural pet foods. For example, new stores offer 200 pet toys, 500 varieties of treats for dogs and cats, and premium foods.
In 2022, the mass merchant is seeking to expand its merchandise with diverse-owned brands particularly in beauty and personal care, over-the-counter and wellness, general merchandise and grocery.
In 2022, Meijer also partnered with hydroponic-grower Revolution Farms to bring local lettuce and salad greens to all its stores. By harvesting at its peak of growth and packaging on-site, Revolution Farms distributes its non-GMO lettuce to Meijer within one or two days of harvest, ensuring its shoppers receive crispier, crunchier lettuce for more flavorful salads. Harvesting daily ensures the longest possible shelf life and near-to-zero waste.
![Meijer Markets](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/e21_0484_1.jpg)
Markets
In 2018, the retailer began introducing smaller footprint neighborhood grocery stores that operate as a market setting focusing on convenience items in a one-of-a-kind store. For example, its Rivertown Market opened in 2021 in Detroit designed with open-air elements, such as a 23-foot ceiling and three garage-style doors that open to an outdoor fresh produce and floral area in warmer months, along with murals painted by local artists in the front and back of the store.
The markets stock an assortment of fresh and prepared foods, including bakery items, fresh meat offerings, Meijer and national brand products, and more than 2,000 local, artisan items with the retailer actively working to increase its assortment of locally made or sourced products. Basic cleaning items along with health and beauty care products from local, Black women-owned businesses also are available at some stores. Additionally, the markets often boast large produce departments and extensive beer, wine and liquor counters. Specialty local delis and local coffee shop banners also add to the aesthetics of some markets.
Collaborative Alliances
Collaborative Alliances
Meijer is known as one of the most collaborative retailers in the industry, regularly partnering with major CPGs on promotions that receive broad support. The collaborations can align with the seasonal calendar, spotlight new SKUs or activate brand sponsorships, but Meijer also accepts campaigns based on novel occasions and cause activity. The retailer's strong relationships with brands leads to a constant stream of innovative programs that compliment annualized promotions. Among noteworthy activity:
- Meijer regularly ties in to Procter & Gamble's brandSaver FSI drop with a bulk-purchase incentive.
- National Football League sponsor Procter & Gamble teamed with Meijer for a campaign celebrating the fandom and "sense of normalcy" Super Bowl LV invoked in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Meijer teamed with Mondelez International’s Oreo for a bulk-purchase incentive drumming up support for the brand's new vanilla-flavored cookies inspired by pop star Lady Gaga in 2021.
- The retailer makes General Mills' "Box Tops for Education" program a significant component of its back-to-school campaigns.
Meijer doesn't pursue exclusive SKUs as often as its channel rivals, so the ones it has typically come from small, specialty brands.
The retailer also regularly runs circular features as overlays to FSI events from Unilever, L'Oreal USA and other major CPGs. Meijer also is happy to accept co-op FSIs and display ads.
Meijer operates VendorNet, a solution for suppliers at vendornet.meijer.com that hosts supplier guidelines and reference documents. It also uses the RangeMe Platform to allow prospective vendors to showcase new grocery and health & beauty care products.
Displays & Signage
Displays & Signage
Meijer is considered one of the most receptive national retailers, willing to provide significant space and even try entirely new types of displays for the right program. The most significant display space is action alley, a wide aisle leading from the entrance that separates the grocery and general merchandise areas of the store. The space is regularly occupied by trains of pallet displays or gondolas with their own in-line and endcap headers, which spotlight new products and seasonal promotions driven by the retailer and key brand partners. Endcap space facing action alley is devoted to significant brand-driven promotions.
The retailer also maintains a huge seasonal section, where it unifies relevant products under in-line headers with its own messaging while offering plenty of space for account-specific pallet displays, endcap displays and floorstands. Seasonal gondolas spread out from this section into the surrounding aisles.
Power wings and sidekicks are extremely common, especially in the health and beauty, and pet care departments. The HBA category also employs plenty of brand-supplied endcap displays, which are found to a lesser degree in general merchandise categories, including auto care, kitchen products and small electronics.
The aisles are kept relatively clear of standing displays, though floor clings are common. Clings are mostly account-specific, promoting mPerks deals, new products or brand-driven sweepstakes. The same is true for the retailer's security wraps, which can promote the availability of new products from a single brand or spotlight a cause campaign or incentive drawing in multiple manufacturers. Stanchion signs positioned near store entrances promote seasonal efforts.

Store Formats/Growth
Store Formats/Growth
Meijer operates more than 240 supercenters in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Supercenters typically stock more than 220,000 SKUs and average 200,000 square feet. Stores carry general merchandise and have large fresh produce sections, bakeries, delis and butcher shops, garden centers and full-service pharmacies. Many locations also have gas stations with their own convenience stores.
The retailer has remodeled numerous locations, and updated stores have expanded grocery as well as health and beauty departments.
The mass merchant has made the Indianapolis market a particular focus in the past few years through new constructions and remodels to better compete with Kroger, which also has a major presence in the area. It is also continuing to grow in Wisconsin, opening more than a dozen stores since entering the state in 2015.
In May 2024, the mass merchant two new supercenters in Ohio, bringing its statewide store count to 55, and another in Michigan, its 127th there.

Markets
Meijer opened a small-format 40,000-square-foot store under the Bridge Street Market banner in Michigan in 2018 followed by Woodward Corner Market and Capital City Market in 2020. In 2021, the retailer expanded the concept by opening a 42,000-square-foot neighborhood grocery store called Rivertown Market in Detroit boasting a 4,700-square-foot produce department with a 52-foot wet wall. In total, the retailer currently operates four small format stores all in Michigan.
The smaller formats also host independent cafes rather than the Starbucks kiosks found at traditional Meijer locations. The format is meant to extend the retailer's reach to places where it can't build a supercenter.
Meijer also is expanding the smaller-format store out of Michigan with a 40,000-square-foot store in Cleveland, Ohio, which opened in January 2024. The Fairfax Market resembles an urban neighborhood market and aims to address food insecurity in the area. The store offers a wide range of products, including meat and deli, fresh produce, bakery goods, plus Meijer and national brand items. The Fairfax Market also has more than 2,000 local products from 150 area vendors, an international section plus local beer and wine options.
Meijer Grocery
Meijer opened two Meijer Grocery stores in Michigan sized at approximately 90,000 square feet. The new format focuses on foods like produce, deli items and baked goods in addition to beer, wine and liquor while offering a limited supply of general merchandise.
The retailer had previously abandoned its similarly-sized Meijer Marketplace concept in 2017, shuttering the two 90,000-square foot stores it had in the Chicago market due to lagging sales.
Special Departments/Services
![Meijer Pharmacy](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/meijercontactlesspharm.jpg)
Special Departments/Services
All stores have delis offering party trays, bakeries making custom cakes and full-service pharmacies, some of which have a drive-through. Other common departments and services include:
- A 24-hour gas station.
- A garden center.
- A Meijer Optical vision center, operated through a partnership with U.S. Vision.
- A photo-processing center.
Meijer has been taking a piecemeal approach to increasing its pharmacy services. Nearly two dozen Meijer stores have Sparrow FastCare healthcare clinics through a partnership with Sparrow Health System. Staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, the clinics provide walk-in treatments of minor injuries and illnesses. The retailer has said it plans to expand on that partnership, though it also is opening clinics through a separate deal with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. Other locations have automatic blood pressure monitors, which are used to coordinate screenings with treatment plans for University of Michigan Health System patients. In 2021, Meijer also partnered with Spectrum Health's Betty Ford Breast Cancer Services to develop a 45-foot mobile mammography bus that provided breast cancer screenings at Meijer stores in Michigan.
The retailer introduced enhanced pet departments with an expanded assortment of food, pet care essentials and toys in 2017 and plans to emphasize the category in all new and remodeled stores going forward.
Meijer is also using its flagship store in Rockford, Mich., to test a sit down cafe serving pizza and sandwiches. Meanwhile, several stores in Michigan and Ohio added Wahlburgers restaurants.
Shelton, Connecticut-based TOMRA operates reverse-vending machines at Meijer stores in Michigan, allowing shoppers to recycle bottles and earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards and other prizes or charitable donations.
![Meijer EV charging station](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/meijer_fairfield_oh_release_v2.jpg)
Electric Vehicle Charging
The mass merchant added its first public electric car fast-charging station with partner EVgo at a location in Ohio in 2022. By late 2023, EVgo had deployed 24 charging stalls at six Meijer locations in Michigan and Ohio, including around Detroit, Cincinnati and Columbus, with plans to install more in Ohio in 2024.
Customer Segments
Customer Segments
Meijer targets families looking to do all of their shopping in one place but who still care about quality food and local products. The retailer has been working to appeal to young Millennials and busy parents with its Meijer Curbside click-and-collect program.
Internet Marketing
Internet Marketing Strategy
Meijer.com
Meijer offers CPGs plenty of space within its website, which includes a large number of brand showcases and seasonal web pages.
Meijer.com's homepage employs a leaderboard ad promoting home delivery. Display ads link to seasonal web pages, weekly featured offers, BOGO deals and items “popular at your store.” The homepage also has links to a digital version of the retailer’s weekly circular along with links to information on mPerks, delivery/pickup, pharmacy/Covid-19 vaccination and testing information, and exclusive online offers along with links to other programs and services. While the digital circular is largely a scan of the print version, Meijer does insert some digital ads that link to brand showcases or the retailer's other websites.
MEmail
A weekly Friday email previews the circular. The retailer also typically sends out nearly daily emails that spotlight deals on national brand products, plug events or seasonal and weekly promotions, and link to brand showcases, mPerks coupons and the digital circular.
Other activity
Meijer runs display ads on the websites of local newspapers and TV networks, as well as through YouTube and a bevvy of other consumer websites. The ads often spotlight national brand products and link to mPerks or Meijer Rewards deals, though some promote larger seasonal campaigns. Meijer also dabbles in paid search with ads on Google.com that link to the retailer's homepage.
Retail Media
Retail Media
Meijer Media is the mass merchant’s retailer media network. In 2024, it added closed-loop measurement capabilities for on- and offsite display advertising, the former managed by Google Advertising Manager and the latter via Google Display & Video 360. The new closed-loop reporting builds on the retailer network’s measurement capabilities and its digital partnership, allowing brand partners to better connect with shoppers and to personalize campaigns for better customer reach.
Trends Report
For the past five years, brand marketers asked to rate various retail media platforms for Path to Purchase Institute Magazine’s annual Trends Report have generally given the platforms good scores. In the 2024 Trends Report, more than half of respondents graded Meijer's creative freedom as "excellent/very good" or “good” but 57% deemed its measurement capabilities as "fair/poor." (See chart below.)

- a store and gas station locator,
- a way to browse the weekly circular,,
- the ability to find and redeem digital coupons and mPerks offers, and
- Shop & Scan. (See below.)
Meijer Rx App
A separate Meijer Rx app has been downloaded more than 100,000 times and helps shoppers refill prescriptions, set refill reminders and pick-up alerts, and locate a pharmacy.
![Meijer Shop and Scan](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/meijer_shop_and_scan_23.jpg)
Shop & Scan
Meijer completed a 15-month initiative to offer Shop & Scan technology through its Meijer Mobile app at all its stores, along with advanced checkout options at 44 stores throughout Southeastern Michigan.
The app allows shoppers to scan barcodes and bag their groceries as they move through the store and then pay using the app at one of the store's self-checkout lanes. More than 80 percent of Meijer app users have repeatedly used the Shop & Scan as part of their shopping experience.

Meijer Home Delivery

Circulars
![Meijer circular](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/blackfridayadcover.jpg)
Circulars and Publications
Sales Dates: Sunday-Saturday
Meijer's weekly ad typically runs from 18 to 23 pages. Early pages are dominated by fresh and packaged foods, giving way to beverages, household products, health and beauty items, pet care and general merchandise. Multiple categories can appear in the same feature promoting a sale or seasonal occasion.
Manufacturers can secure large features by providing bulk-purchase incentives, sweepstakes or mPerks coupons. Overlays to manufacture FSI events are common. New product launches also regularly enjoy circular support. Some features contain coupons.
The mass merchant regularly devotes supplemental circulars to categories, such as consumer electronics or auto care. Those tabs average four pages and include a mix of BOGO deals, coupons and mail-in rebates that are valid for about two weeks.
Meijer puts out larger publications for key marketing campaigns, such as a 38-page holiday toy book; Halloween flyers with costume ideas, candy suggestions and more; electronics guides; and specialty flyers for observances such as Pizza Month. All can be found on Meijer's website.
Loyalty Programs
Loyalty Programs
Meijer's mPerks rewards program, revamped in early 2023 to a points-based system, gives members additional rewards-earning opportunities and personalized savings. Among the benefits:
- Access to hundreds of digital coupons,
- Access to exclusive sales and events offering savings such as 10% off general merchandise, $5 off a $50 purchase, and
- A digital record of past receipts with use of the Meijer app.
New benefits include:
- Letting members decide how and when they want to redeem points: Now, every 1,000 points earned amounts to $1 off a future qualifying purchase, or 1,500 points can be used toward 10 cents off at the gas pump,
- Doubling the points redemption window to 90 days, and
- Accruing points with each qualifying prescription, rather than every five filled.
The Meijer credit card and Meijer MasterCard awards a $10 coupon for every $750 spent and 10 cents off per gallon of gas purchased at one of the retailer's fuel stations. New cardholders receive $10 off their first in-store purchase. The Meijer MasterCard additionally awards $100 off a statement for shoppers who spend $1,000 on purchases outside of Meijer within 90 days of activation. With mPerks, shoppers can opt in to receive their credit card rewards digitally.
Private Label
Private Label
Meijer spends relatively little effort promoting its private labels, giving them only occasional secondary displays or positioning them alongside national brand equivalents as part of cross-merchandising programs. (Though Meijer's Purple Cow ice cream permanently receives the spotlight in the frozen aisle with an in-line display.) It still boasts a robust portfolio that spans a wide variety of categories:

Cause/Community Programs
Meijer donates more than 6% of its annual net profits to charity. Among shopper-facing programs:
- Simply Give: The retailer sells $10 donation cards in stores, which are converted to food-only gift cards and given to local food pantries. The retailer double matches shopper donations on select days during each of the three annual flights, which happen in the spring, fall and during the holiday season. Meijer also solicits additional donations from cosponsors of the annual Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, which has generated $8.65 million through its eight tournaments. The retailer has also partnered with Major League Baseball team the Detroit Tigers in 2023 on a "Striking Out Hunger" initiative, where Meijer and the Tigers contributed $100 to Simply Give each time a Tigers pitcher struck out the opposing batter. Simply Give has generated more than $86 million for Midwestern food pantries since it was launched in 2008.
- In 2024, Meijer made a surprise $2 million donation to 30 food bank partners.
- Meijer also runs a food rescue program, donating meat, cheese, deli and bakery items to those same food banks.
- In 2022, the retailer began offering discounts on fruits and vegetables for its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) customers.
- In 2023, Campbell's Chunky Soup teamed with NFL players and Meijer team members to pack and distribute cans of soup to those in need.
- National Diaper Bank Network: The retailer partnered with Kimberly-Clark's Huggies brand to donate up to 400,000 diapers to New Haven, Connecticut-based National Diaper Bank Network. For a limited-time, when shoppers purchased a pack of Huggies diapers at a Meijer store or on Meijer.com, Huggies donated a day's worth of diapers to the bank.
- The Fred & Lena Meijer Scholarship: Originally established in 1975 to assist the children of Meijer employees but expanded to also include employees themselves, the annual scholarship awarded by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation is based on financial need, community involvement and academic achievement. The foundation awards numerous $4,000 and $10,000 scholarships.
![Meijer Teacher Discount](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/meijer_teacher_discount_extends_entire_school_year_1.jpg)
- Teacher Discount: The Midwest retailer brought back its 15% discount on classroom essentials for the 2023-2024 school year. The discount offers savings on school and home office supplies – like paper, pencils, folders and notebooks – as well as craft supplies and hand sanitizer and can be combined with mPerks Rewards. For 2023-2024 discount, Meijer added extra categories like children's apparel.
- Breast Cancer Awareness: Meijer funds mobile mammography units operated by Spectrum Health’s Betty Ford Breast Care Services and supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Produce Program during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Activity is especially strong during the holiday season when Meijer runs a series of annual campaigns:
- Shop With a Hero: Hosts more than 100 events where underprivileged children shop for holiday gifts for themselves and their families with area police, firefighters and Marines.
![Very Merry Meijer](https://assets1.p2pi.com/s3fs-public/styles/hero/s3/2022-07/very_merry_meijer_customer_surprise.jpg)
- Very Merry Meijer: Since 2014, each store has randomly selected a shopper to receive their purchase for free. In 2022, the winners inside the store received a $1,000 holiday shopping spree, and the retailer also gifted two Pickup customers at each location with a $250 coupon for a future order as well as gift bags full of Meijer products. Meijer also awarded three employees in each store with $200 gift cards to show appreciation. In total, the nine Very Merry Meijer events gifted approximately 4,200 customers with more than $1.8 million.
- 12 Days of Meijer: In 2023, Meijer randomly surprised more than 10,000 pickup customers across its six-state footprint with a coupon valued at $50, $100, $250 or $500, or a gift box full of holiday-themed items.
- In 2021, for the first time, the retailer donated nearly $3 million to local nonprofits as identified and selected by its store and distribution facility employees. Each store and distribution facility awarded either one local nonprofit $10,000 or two nonprofits $5,000 apiece in the Meijer Team Gives donation program. The funds were distributed on Giving Tuesday. Following that success, in 2022 the program donated more than $3 million to more than 500 nonprofit groups and included its six new Meijer locations in the process. Additionally, Meijer developed a Diversity & Inclusion effort and is involved in multiple cause initiatives:
- In 2023, the retailer is unveiling several local artist collections, each featuring the work of three artists. The first rollout commemorated Black History Month, with 5% of that collection's sales benefiting Urban League affiliates in Indiana and Michigan. Other 2023 collections are linked to Women's History Month (benefiting American Heart Association initiatives), Pride Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Products featuring the artwork are sold online and in-store.
- Meijer kicked off a diversity-centered "Confidence Beyond Measure" marketing campaign for women's apparel in 2020, extending it to men's and children's apparel in 2021.
- In 2021, the retailer invested $1 million in 19 Urban League chapters across the Midwest.

The retailer also has been recognized multiple times for achievements in sustainability and continues to advance its goals:
- In 2022, Meijer donated $1 million to the Council of the Great Lakes Region to help alleviate plastic pollution and raise awareness about sustainable packaging and litter prevention in the Great Lakes. In 2022, Meijer also sponsored Adopt-a-Beach cleanup events. Beach and waterway cleanups have been assisted by drone technology.

- Meijer will host its first Sustainability Supplier Summer in 2022 to give vendors nationwide the chance to showcase their sustainable products from food to pet to home good, for the retailer to consider carrying.
- After Covid-19 caused delays in rolling out Flashfood to all its stores in 2020, Meijer completed implementation of the food waste reduction program in 2021. While cutting down on in-store food waste, the initiative allows shoppers to purchase food nearing its sell-by date, such as meat, produce, seafood, deli and bakery products, at up to 50 percent off on the Flashfood app, and then pick them up at Meijer stores. The retailer launched the app-based pilot program in 2019 at a handful of Meijer supercenters in Metro Detroit, and reduced in-store waste by 10 percent. In 2022, approximately 255 Meijer supercenters have Flashfood and more than 1 million pounds of potential food has been diverted. In March 2023, the retailer said it would accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits at all of its supercenters and grocery stores through the Flashfood app.
- In 2022, the retailer announced a goal to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 50% by 2025 by building on existing energy and fleet efficiency programs by adding more renewable energy procurement and piloting innovative technologies, such as energy-saving geothermal projects for refrigeration next year. Meijer has already managed to reduce emissions by 17 percent since 2014, which equals a 30% reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per square foot. The retailer also signed a solar energy project in 2022. Additionally, the retailer signed a renewable product purchase agreement (RPPA) with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources of which Meijer will purchase the majority of energy generated by the Lacy Creek Wind Energy Center product, which 108 wind turbines to generate renewable energy..

- In 2021, the retailer in collaboration with Dow, enabled a new paving technique using recycled plastic bags deposited by customers through Meijer’s in-store plastic film recycling program to lay a parking lot for its Holland, Michigan, supercenter. The three-phase pilot project used the equivalent weight of 944,000 plastic grocery bags. In 2014, Meijer placed a collection bin inside the front entrances of each of its stores for customers to deposit plastic bags and films, and in 2021 the retailer estimated it recycled 6 million pounds of plastics through the program.
