Sweet'N Low Launches Retro Hair Salon Exhibit at JFK Airport

The sweetener brand has opened the “Sweet’N Glow” salon, an immersive, sixties-inspired pop-up at the landmark TWA Hotel, to provide travelers a nostalgic photo-op and onsite experience for the summer.

Zero-calorie “pink” sweetener Sweet'N Low has debuted the “Sweet’N Glow” salon, an immersive, sixties-inspired pop-up exhibit at the landmark TWA Hotel at New York's John F. Kennedy International (JFK) Airport.

The experience embodies the retro glamour and style of the TWA hotel, a chic on-airport hotel located in terminal 5 in the former TWA Flight Center, also known as the Trans World Flight Center, which was designed by architect Eero Saarinen in 1962. The experiential hotel complex comprises 512 midcentury modern rooms with views of JFK's runways and the historic headhouse, museum exhibits, restaurants, a rooftop infinity pool and observation deck, an Intelligentsia coffee bar and retail shops.

Sweet’N Low opened the Instagrammable pink destination, located in the heart of the hotel next to the iconic Sunken Lounge, in June for a limited time as a way to bring the brand to life. The space was designed for travelers, “nostalgia-seekers” and “pink-lovers” to experience the ambience of the '60s, a time of revolutionary hairstyles popularized by stars like the The Ronettes and Twiggy, according to a news release.

The Sweet'N Glow salon’s mid-century aesthetic includes original beehive hairdryers, a retro wig display and vintage Sweet'N Low and TWA decor. Visitors can put on a pink smock and sit under a dryer while they flip through vintage-inspired magazines or pose behind the salon desk featuring custom wallpaper of old-timey hairstyles in the background for a photo-op.

Visitors can also check out memorabilia and ephemera from both TWA and the sweetener brand, including a 1960s advertisement starring TWA flight attendant Judy Neumann, who was voted "the girl in the air with the most beautiful hair," per the release.

After experiencing this exhibit, guests can order a cup of coffee from Intelligentsia, sweetened with the Sweet’N Low’s iconic little pink packet.

"We couldn't imagine a more perfectly pink, retro way to bring our Sweet'N Low brand to life," Sara Hoskow, marketing manager at Sweet'N Low, said in the release. "We were thrilled at the opportunity to collaborate with the TWA Hotel, a space that already felt so naturally suited to our nostalgic tone.”

Sweet'N Low considers the brand to be a “significant part of American culture,” as its recognizable packets have been widely available at restaurants, coffee shops, homes and on planes since the 1950s. Owner and manufacturer of the brand, Cumberland Packing Corp., said in the release that it strives to create curated experiences like the Sweet'N Glow salon that uniquely connects consumers with the brand and pays homage to its history.
