Sainsbury’s Upgrades Checkout Experience

The U.K. grocer will leverage NCR Voyix cloud technology and roll out next-gen self-checkout systems that deliver personalized promotions and speed up the customer journey.

British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has expanded its partnership with digital commerce solutions provider NCR Voyix to help transform its shopping experience and support its “Next Level” business strategy. 

The seven-year agreement builds on the U.K. grocer’s more than 20-year strategic partnership with NCR Voyix. 

With the move, Sainsbury’s is upgrading its checkout technology by rolling out NCR Voyix’s commerce platform, point-of-sale (POS) solutions and “next generation” self-checkout systems across its supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations (i.e., 22,500 checkouts), according to a media release. 

These technologies are powered by NCR Voyix Edge software, which was designed to provide innovative solutions to customers and store associates.

Sainsbury’s will leverage NCR Voyix cloud technology to speed up the customer journey. The tech will provide real-time data and analytics as well as artificial intelligence-powered sales analysis, helping the grocer estimate future store performance, colleague productivity and cash management.

The platform will also enable store associates to approve transactions remotely via tablet, speeding up the checkout process and creating a better shopping experience. Additionally, the next-gen self-checkout systems, also powered by AI technologies, will deliver personalized promotions uniquely tailored to each customer, per the release.

“Our commitment to unbeatable quality food and great service, whether in store or online, is strengthened by NCR Voyix technology,” Clodagh Moriarty, chief retail and technology director, Sainsbury’s, said in the release. “NCR Voyix has grown alongside Sainsbury’s for two decades, unlocking new capabilities and optimizing product management, sales forecasting and store efficiencies.”

“With our modern software-first approach, Sainsbury’s can implement rapid changes at much lower costs, run services in the cloud while the store can operate self-checkout at the speed of a digital channel,” added Eric Schoch, executive vice president and president of retail at NCR Voyix.

Sainsbury’s is betting that the edge-enabled POS system deployed by NCR Voyix will give it the flexibility to adapt to market trends quickly, eliminating in-store complexities and paving the way for innovative digital and in-store experiences for customers.
