Walmart has signed a contract extension with digital shelf label (DSL) technology provider VusionGroup to accelerate the deployment of its solutions across all of the retailer’s 4,600 stores in the U.S.

The extension follows Walmart’s June 2024 announcement to expand its use of VusionGroup’s DSLs (also known as electronic shelf labels or ESLs) to 2,300 stores by 2026 to improve and speed up how associates manage pricing, inventory, order fulfillment and customer interactions.

“We are pleased with the results of the program rollout [in 2024] and are looking forward to further expanding to more stores,” Greg Cathe, senior vice president, transformation and innovation at Walmart U.S., said in a Dec. 23 news release from VusionGroup. “[DSLs] have been a game-changer and [they simplify] the daily activities of our store teams.”

As part of the initial program, VusionGroup’s EdgeSense and VusionCloud solutions were integrated into 500 Walmart stores. With a successful launch, Walmart is now accelerating the pace of installations and “ready to deploy” at all U.S. stores, per the release.

  • EdgeSense is a digital shelf system that integrates centralized and device-to-device communication with in-store geolocation and built-in proximity sensing.
  • The VusionCloud platform is a retail IoT management solution that enables associates/Walmart to track, monitor and manage digital price tags and IoT devices from anywhere, anytime.

Walmart has been exploring DSLs as early as 2019 to enhance the customer experience and make price changes more efficient. Walmart stores have more than 120,000 products on shelves, each with an individual price tag. Every week, the stores support thousands of pricing updates for new items, Rollbacks and markdowns.

“Helping Walmart in their store digitalization journey has been a privilege for us so far,” added Philippe Bottine, CEO Americas and group deputy CEO, VusionGroup. “This partnership is all about helping Walmart progress on [its] digital transformation journey, as well enhancing the associate and shopper experiences.”

VusionGroup (formerly named SES-imagotag) said the contract extension with Walmart is worth about $1.027 billion (or 1 billion euros).
