Children’s electronics manufacturer VTech has rolled out an expanded recycling program allowing consumers to discard old or broken VTech or LeapFrog electronic toys at public drop-off locations that recycle with TerraCycle.
The “Toys Free Recycling Program” also offers another way for consumers to get rid of old toys. For those who’d rather ship in their unwanted toys or are not near a drop-off location, VTech is running a “Ship + Win” promotion through Jan. 31, awarding various prizes to select participants.
Through the drop-off location program, VTech and LeapFrog are leaning into education by encouraging parents to show their children how to be sustainably responsible when donating isn't an option, according to a Jan. 25 media release.
Consumers can use the map on the dedicated TerraCycle program page to locate a public drop-off point, including retail locations, schools, libraries and other public spaces. Those opting to ship their toys can also sign up on the same page, download a prepaid shipping label and mail the toys.
For every shipment of VTech and LeapFrog electronics sent to TerraCycle, consumers earn TerraCycle points that can be donated to a nonprofit, school or charitable organization of their choice. Shipments earn 100 points per pound, and each point equals a $0.01 donation.
To encourage increased collections, everyone who ships through Jan. 31 will earn 500 bonus points and a chance to win a $50 prize pack from the two brands.
"The new year is a great time to remind everyone that old and unusable toys can easily be recycled," Andy Keimach, president, VTech Electronics North America, said in the release. "We hope this initiative will encourage our consumers and everyone that finds joy from the world of toys to join VTech in our sustainability efforts by participating in our toy recycling program."
VTech's partnership with TerraCycle is part of its commitment to its Sustainability Plan 2025, which includes efforts to develop eco-friendly products and packaging and continued engagement in various post-consumer recycling programs.
