PetSmart tied in to the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holidays with a series of promotions benefiting veterans. The retailer teamed with Blue Buffalo Co. to raise funds for Service Dogs for Heroes, soliciting donations at checkout from May 22 to July 5. Checkout signs, window posters, A-boards and account-specific floorstands merchandising Red, White & Blue Bars from Blue Buffalo promoted the campaign in stores. The seasonal treats were also stocked on checkout displays offering a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal from May 2-15. A TV spot (see below), email blasts, a feature in the retailer's May 22 circular, and Facebook and Twitter updates supported the fundraiser.Meanwhile, purchases of select grooming services, training classes and PetsHotel packages from May 1 to July 5 triggered a donation of $1 to PetSmart Charities to support programs that train and place therapy and service animals with disabled veterans. Window posters promoted the effort. This is PetSmart's fourth service-focused fundraiser, though in past years the donations instead went to Canine Companions for Independence. (See "Cause/Community Programs" for more information on PetSmart's charitable efforts.)Stores also offered veterans and active duty military 20% off grooming services from May 26-29 and June 29 to July 4, touting the deal with stanchion signs. A-boards spotlighted the retailer's ongoing "Military Appreciation Monday" program, which offers a weekly 10% discount.
