H-E-B Launches E-Commerce Business

Joining the e-commerce scene and expanding its reach, Texas grocer H-E-B began selling nonperishable items on its website for home delivery last week.More than 50,000 shelf stable foods, OTC and general merchandise products are now available for purchase on heb.com to ship within the continental U.S. (excluding California) and to military bases worldwide. Online items include both private labels and national brands such as General Mills’ Cheerios, Procter & Gamble’s Vicks NyQuil and Coca-Cola Co.’s Sprite.The San Antonio, TX-based retailer also launched a “Totally Texas” web page (heb.com/texas) devoted to products made in Texas or inspired by Texans. The page spotlights 263 products (as of Nov. 12) from manufacturers such as San Antonio, TX-based Whataburger as well as Stubb’s Legendary Bar-B-Q, founded by late Texas restaurateur C.B. Stubblefield.H-E-B used Nov. 12 Twitter and Facebook updates to spotlight its new e-commerce business, boasting it shipped its first seven online orders to military bases across the country in honor of Veterans Day. A carousel ad and promotional page support."We've been receiving calls for decades from Texans around the country that miss their favorite foods from home like H‑E‑B Texas‑shaped corn tortilla chips and H‑E‑B Cafe Ole Taste of Texas coffees," said Martin Otto, H‑E‑B’s chief merchant and chief financial officer, in a media release. "Now, even if you move outside of Texas, you'll still have a 'neighborhood H‑E‑B' just a click away."Until recently, H-E-B has been slow to the e-commerce landscape, only allowing shoppers to order cakes and party platters online for in-store pickup. Floral arrangements, balloons, gift baskets and gift cards have also been available for purchase online and delivered for an additional fee.
