Sony's new Digital Satellite System is being introduced with a compact display that contains two high-quality speakers plus two overhead rear-channel speakers, a 27-inch television, a live-feed satellite dish and supporting graphics and collateral materials.

Comments: Due to the interactive nature of the display, as well as the young age of Pico's target market, the display had to protect the product and the 13-inch monitor. By rotationally molding three main components and employing Pico's bright colors, an inviting -- as well as durable -- environment was created.

Comments: The challenge was to demonstrate a new personal communications product in a theft-resistant way. A vacuum-formed, oversized replica of the product serves as a countertop display base. The base has a routed opening for a rear-illuminated transparency. A special bracket and shelf allow access to the product for adjustment, yet it cannot be tampered with by customers.

Comments: A TV monitor with a laser disc player that provides an ongoing tutorial is the solution to the client's need for an electronic salesperson. The electronics are housed in laminate-covered particleboard with a section, created with a vacuum-forming and particleboard combination, that is spray painted with a speckled, textured finish. The header is illuminated by a Duratrans acrylic logo sign.

Comments: The display demonstrates how radio signals travel from a transmitter switch to receiver switch (and the light it operates). The materials and processes used included plexiglass, injection-molded parts, vacuum-forming, styrene fabrication and chrome printing. The electronics, using chip and board design, accomplishes the visual demonstration of sequential lights to demonstrate radio signals.

Comments: The display shape identifies the product area and manufacturer. The unusual size attracts curious customers. The display was constructed of standard construction-size PVC pipe. No tooling was involved. A custom-designed circuit board controls all functions: display screen sequencing, calculations, timing and voltage regulation.

Comments: Using an actual tool on a pressure-treated "mini deck," the display demonstrates the use of the boardbender for decking and framing. The unit hangs on home center racking or stands on a counter. Silkscreened illustrations and a four-color flier offer more detailed features.
